Social bookmarking and search engine optimisation
Social bookmarking is a way to share links of interest. It allows you to submit links with a description to let the world know that you have discovered something interesting. However in recent days, submitting links to social bookmarking sites have become a search engine optimisation technique. The method allows the links to gain popularity in the eyes of major search engines.
There are many social bookmarking sites where links get indexed by search engine spiders. Now there are 2 types of links; “do follow” and “no follow” links. The “do follow” links means that links are indexed by the search engines and act as a vote for your site. This in turn helps the links to gain popularity. “No follow” links are of no value as far as search engines are concerned.
There are several “do follow” social book marking sites, one of which is sheoldme.com. I was very pleased to find out about this site so I joined the site.
I want to talk about a website called "shetoldme", a social book marking site that allows one to make money at the same time. There are many social bookmarking sites where one is able to share links and make money. Shetoldme claims that it is a social bookmarking site with adsense revenue sharing. I therefore signed up with this site so that I can share links similar to the well known social networking site called "Digg".
These are some of the benefits that I was hoping for when I joined shetoldme:
More traffic: More links I added on shetoldme.com, more direct traffic.
Increased visibility and link popularity: As the site was "do follow", it would help the links to get indexed and rank well in the search engines.
100% adsense sharing (100% adSense revenue sharing program). The site allows one to add their adsense code and get 100% adsense impressions. This means that no other adsense codes will be present other than yours.
My account was deleted
I got an email from the site owner called James telling me that my account has been disabled. I was intrigued as to why my account was deleted as most of my links were from hubpages and personal blogs, neither was it related to any undesirable content.
I therefore enquired why the account was deleted and what I can do to sort out the issues. I got an email from James. He replied that my links where India related and although it got lot of traffic it was not making money. I was also told to look elsewhere for my links.
Indeed my sites are INDIA centred. Most of my links to the site were related to India. I was carefully choosing my keywords to get maximum traffic to the shetoldme site and ultimately to my links.
This is not only rude, misleads about the signup process, deletes your account without notice, keeps the keywords in the titles to get traffic to his own site but there is also a hint of sarcasm in the webmaster's tone and approach. I therefore request you to stay from the shetoldme site, your hard work will go to waste as your never know when the webmaster will delete your account. I looked up on the internet to see if others were also banned. I realised there were others as well. You could be next. This person still keeps the hard work that I put in to bring traffic to the site as it still has my keywords in the URL as seen in the image.
100% adsense impression?
In addition, it did not share full 100% adsense impressions as originally claimed. When I had a look at the source code of the pages, I discovered that there were 3 adsense codes. I enquired with the webmaster who told me that there were 3 adsense codes on the pages. One was shetoldme's owns adsense code, the person who referred me to the shetoldme and the third was mine. The placement was unusual as well. The site's adsense code was on the top (more chances of being clicked), mine was on the left side and the referrer’s adsense code was on the bottom. This clearly shows that the site does not give you 100% adsense impressions as claimed. It splits 3 ways between their owns, yours and the referrer. The best position is reserved for the sites own code. No wonder I got lots of traffic but no revenue. This clearly suggests that the the site has not been truthful.
Something to hide
Whois search of shetoldme
If you do a "whois" search on the site, you will notice that the domain is a private domain. The address, the phone numbers are hidden. This means that the site owner has something to hide. Unlike hubpages, their whereabouts information are masked. You would expect to find the address of a reliable website. Does this mean that the site has something to hide. Shetoldme has nothing more than an email address if you wish to contact them.
