Social Media Phobia
There are millions of people across the globe using social media as a regular form of communication and information sharing.
Believe it or not, there are many who are not yet on board and you will even hear some exclaim loudly that they don’t want any part of it.
The truth is, many are afraid that it will invade their privacy and they don’t see why they can’t just use the cell phone and speak in person like they have always done. Email is absolutely an accepted form of communication now among most every social circle, including the most elderly that are unlikely candidates. As email becomes the norm, they all jump on the wagon.
The reality is that many are afraid of social media because they don’t understand it, don’t know how to use it, or aren’t ready to join the modern era of communication. When it comes to business owners, however, the factor may have more to do with their time limits. Everything that one does that is new must be done right when you own a business. That’s far different than high school students just trying to find one more way to be connected.
You can give others the confidence to try this new manner of communication. If business owners only understood the sheer power that they can harness by the use of social media, they might be far more interested in learning what it’s all about. When you explain how it will cost little or nothing to use and generate interest in their products or services, you may just get some inquisitory dialog going on. If you use social media with your business it definitely works to your advantage every time you encourage one more business owner to join the e-crowd.
Social media naysayers are not lacking in education or skills. In general, they may be more than capable, but believe it’s something for the college kids to use and they are not about to tarnish their hard won image in any way. It’s taken years of hard work, sweat and tears to build the business. They aren’t about to throw it all away for a Farmville points or for social purposes.
Explaining that the sophistication of social media has come a long way may help to convince them. Show them your social media pages and communications could change the minds of some holdouts. LinkedIn is a very good and professional place to start.
