Threat Level: Email harvesting for possible identify theft and subsequent spam generation.

Attachment: None

Exposure: Responding to the email will provide your contact information to the spammer, which may or may not be legitimate. Responding to the email address included in the text of the message will reveal your email address to the recipient.

Pragmatism: Puegeot is a legitimate automobile company and probably gives away vehicles periodically, they wouldn't use this technique. The contact address, customercarepeugeot@9.cn, is a domain that does not exist (9.cn). A legitimate Puegot contact address would use the Puegeot.com domain. If you did win the money, you would expect the email to know a little more about you, such as your name. The text of the message is too general to be legitimate; it could apply to any recipient. Note that "headquaters" is misspelled several times.

Strategy:

  • Erase the email.
  • Do not respond to this type of email. Never give out your contact information, social security number, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, or any other personal information to an untrusted web site or email sender. Simply responding to the message confirms to the recipient that you actually exist.
  • Never open any attachments from untrusted senders.
  • Never forward attachments from untrusted senders.

These guys put so much time and effort into these scams. If they focused all that intensity on a real job, they'd probably become vice president of the company in no time.
