Speak Geek: Learn Computer Slang

Intro Notes:

Below is a list of Internet/Web Acronyms (also known as Computer/Chat slang, abbreviations, and jargon), some of these are new and a few are almost obsolete. Also for parents checking out this site, I have underlined expressions that are used inappropriately or used to be sly, also ones that are manipulated commonly by teens or child predators.

I have done quite the amount of research for this because this seems to be an ignorant field even for the computer savvy...so let me know if this helped or if there is something that should be added THX

Your list is more comprehensive, but I wrote a hub addressing parents' concerns at http://hubpages.com/technology/Parents_Guide_to_In...

It's got some dangerous terms I don't see here - but this stuff is changing by the day! There's also a link there for a site that decodes Leetspeak. Parents need all the help we can get.

What does "bump" mean on a message board? Thanks for all the great info, btw.

Punkin 9 years ago

Another slang: USCWOAP means 'up shit creek with out a paddle'. Also WPF means 'when pigs fly'.

Hector 9 years ago

Que significa en lenguaje de chat hyu6 what is the meaning of hyu6 in chat lenguage

Alauna 9 years ago

*bump* is used in message boards to keep dieing topics on the front page, so as to keep people interested. Usually happens when hot topics run out of steam, but 2-3 people still want to "beat the dead horse".

Can also be used to revive old threads that contain usefull info. (this is commonly known as a neco-bump)

tl;dr (too long; didn't read) -2b used when a lit posts

404: no info/don't know (from the web error message)

BSOD (or is this one too common?): Blue Screen Of Death (when Windows shows a blue screen with a lot of letters and numbers instead of your pretty desktop, generally right after you saved a 5,000 words dissertation......)

STFW (see STW), GIYF (google is your friend)

GCP (google copy and paste): in answer to "where did you get that from?" or more often to put things right when somebody pretends to know stuff but all they really do is to......GCP

w00t : initially "we owned the other team" to describe a total victory in a MMRPG game, now any victory, like fixed broken PC, managed to VPN to work, got a new gf/bf

Uh, everyone, just do yourselves a favour and do no use this on any normal forum (as opposed to forums dominated by the alien race currently known as "teenagers"). You might see one or 2 acronyms here and there, but ...read a few posts before posting and adapt.........

I notice the comments go as far back as three years ago, up to now as recently as two months ago. A very fascinating piece which is up my line of interest. I am busy developing the new emerging language from the cyber world. I would like to use it in my hub which I am developing. Can you give me some permission to use part of these words in my hub? I will not use them as you have already done above, but they are one of the most important additional pieces of data I'd like to utilize. Do you have a site I can google to find the whole list? Can you update your hub to see what other 'slang' words have be added to the list? I hope you answer and give me a go ahead to use some of the acronyms you have listed above. Looking to hearing from you
