Strolling Through Lynnfield: Intel's New SuperFast SuperAffordable CPU! Part 2

In its infinite wisdom, Intel has chosen to market its Nehalem line under the Core i series followed by a number. Now, I'm not overly clear on what the heck this numbering system is all about as not all of the number series have been released yet.

So far we have Core i7 and Core i5. These CPUs are out and some are available now, while others are to debut soon. There are also supposed to be Core i3 and Core i9 CPUs but they haven't seen the light of day quite yet.

The Socket differences are obvious. My Core i7 runs happily on a huge Socket LGA 1366, but the Core i7 8xx series, as well as all the Core i5 and Core i3 series run on a Socket LGA 1156. I hope you're keeping tabs as there's going to be a test later.

The full lineup of Core i X CPUs is supposed to be as follows:

  • Core i7 975 - 4 Cores With Hyper Threading, 3.33 GHz Processor With 8 MB Cache, on a Socket LGA 1366
  • Core i7 960 - 4 Cores With Hyper Threading, 3.20 GHz Processor With 8 MB Cache, on a Socket LGA 1366
  • Core i7 950 - 4 Cores With Hyper Threading, 3.06 GHz Processor With 8 MB Cache, on a Socket LGA 1366
  • Core i7 920 - 4 Cores With Hyper Threading, 2.66 GHz Processor With 8 MB Cache, on a Socket LGA 1366
  • Core i7 870 - 4 Cores With Hyper Threading, 2.93 GHz Processor With 8 MB Cache, on a Socket LGA 1156
  • Core i7 860 - 4 Cores With Hyper Threading, 2.80 GHz Processor With 8 MB Cache, on a Socket LGA 1156
  • Core i5 750 - 4 Cores Without Hyper Threading, 2.66 GHz Processor With 4 MB Cache, on a Socket LGA 1156
  • Core i5 670 - 2 Cores With Hyper Threading, 3.46 GHz Processor With 4 MB Cache, on a Socket LGA 1156
  • Core i5 661 - 2 Cores With Hyper Threading, 3.33 GHz Processor With 4 MB Cache, on a Socket LGA 1156
  • Core i5 660 - 2 Cores With Hyper Threading, 3.33 GHz Processor With 4 MB Cache, on a Socket LGA 1156
  • Core i5 650 - 2 Cores With Hyper Threading, 3.20 GHz Processor With 4 MB Cache, on a Socket LGA 1156
  • Core i3 540 - 2 Cores With Hyper Threading, 3.06 GHz Processor With 4 MB Cache, on a Socket LGA 1156
  • Core i3 530 - 2 Cores With Hyper Threading, 2.93 GHz Processor With 4 MB Cache, on a Socket LGA 1156

Of course, nothing is ever final with any silicon manufacturer until the shipping starts, and you can ask my "friends" over at AMD about Barcelona, and they'll tell you that it isn't final even when the shipping is under way. Yes, how could anyone have forgotten Barcelona. The greatest single disaster in the history of silicon. It was a wonder that the Catalans didn't march over to the AMD headquarters and burn the place down for besmirching the honorable name of their lovely capital city. The Barcelona launch was a perfect storm of incompetence with the turbo button pushed by the endless stream of misdirections and outright lies generating from the AMD boardroom... but... I digress.
