Picking the Best 3D HDTV

Here you will learn about what makes for an excellent 3D HDTV and I will show you which are the best 3D HDTVs for your home.

Most of the new 3D televisions are LCD or plasma sets, however there are also some rear-projection DLP sets that offer 3D capability.

3D Before

In the old days 3D was limited to anaglyph (think red and blue glasses). Anaglyph images are used to provide a stereoscopic 3D effect and were commonly used in old 3D movies from the 1950's and 60'.

Later, polarized, also known as passive, technology was used to create such films as Avatar, Tangled, and IMAX movies. In order for you to watch these movies you need to wear 3D glasses.

3D Now

3D HDTVs now use what is known as "active 3D technology" and display one image to your left eye and one image to your right eye. Since the frame rate is effectively halved, these 3D HDTVs need to have double the frame rate of regular HDTVs (60 Hz).

For this reason all 3D HDTVs have a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz (most of these HDTVs have a frame rate around 240 Hz or even 480 Hz).

The people watching the 3D HDTV can then wear "active liquid crystal shutter" glasses, which quickly block each eye in sequence to ensure that each eye only sees the corresponding image being displayed on the 3D TV set. The active shutter glasses are kept in sync with the HDTV using radio, infrared, or Bluetooth technology. These special 3D glasses typically contain liquid crystals that can be made opaque, which act as a shutter.
