There Is Structure To Everything In Universal, And On Any Form Manifestating Itself In Real Reality

One of the first steps for me to do in this Hub is to try and give some parameters as to what constitutes or is Consciousness.Understanding Structure, memory and consciousness, would be apropos in this part of the Hug. The article below is inspired by the musings and writing os Julian Jaynes who talks about the origins of consciousness.

Memory Banks of Consciousness

All universal consciousness is seen as a living memory of the creator, a conscious living thought form of supreme intelligence. These living memory membranes, act as data banks which contain all forms of creation past present and future. There are some evolved souls that have are on their spiritual journey that can connect with these higher realms of consciousness and recall past events and future possibilities not just in earthly terms but in many universal forms of consciousness.

Memory banks are data banks not only to hold universal memories but also can create new ones from the possibilities to the probable outcome within the light of creation. They hold all the inventions and creativeness of universal evolution as the universal source creates out of it's own consciousness.

These energies are continually changing and moving within their own vibration and oscillation nothing is ever stagnant as energy must continually vibrate and oscillate within their own form of consciousness. Universal consciousness is a massive fluctuation of colourfull energy patterns which intertwine throughout the multi-universes creating and non creating the thoughts of universal intelligence of the creator.

Many things are created for all varieties of life on many planets not just on planet earth, but not all of them get manifested as so many are only possibilities until they are observed, once observed it then becomes a probability and gets materialised into a solidity of matter. Imagine someone who writes a play there are many possibilities to this play, the theme of this particular play is that someone gets murdered so there must be a murderer in the play.

This is the probability but there are many ways to create such a murder so that gives the writer of the play many choices, but the outcome will still be that someone gets murdered and that someone was the murderer. Universal creation is similar in that it has so many potentials to the theme or creation that is being created on an ethereal level that it is open to many possibilities that will lead to an outcome of a probability, but once the script and the players have been chosen and the rehearsals get under way it becomes more and more manifested until it appears in the realm of solidity or reality.

While the script is being written it can be altered until the play writer is happy with what he has written and the roles he has chosen, but once that play goes on the universal stage then nothing can be altered it then gets manifested into a reality. This is how universal energies work once it’s been played out in its full form of the play in its ethereal realms then it will manifest itself and cannot be changed.

Re-Restructuting Newer Froms Of Structural Consciousness

There is a structure to everything in universal creation and there is a structure to all forms of sentient life no matter how chaotic it may seem in the manifestation of reality. No matter how dark that reality may seem in its illusion of earthly reality, the outcome will always be seen through the light and form of its creator. To bring about change to any form of reality you have to re-structure a new form of consciousness, create a new scenario to a new play, but first the old play must close before a new one can begin this is how universal consciousness works.

It creates all forms of plays with all different roles for people to play, but there comes a time when these plays need to close so that new ones can begin this brings in a new form of structure a new theme to a new play(Existential Reality). This is what is now happening in the earthly reality, old themes will now close and new ones will begin this can bring about illusions of chaos but what is to be remembered is that we who live on earth have not seen the ending of the play and how the beginning of the new play begins.

These new realistic manifestations have many possibilities but some of those possibilities have already been played out in their manifested role in the ethereal realms of universal creation, we now must wait and see which ones have been chosen to manifest in our reality, but no matter which one it is or how it seems to us in our illusions of reality, you can be sure that the final outcome will be through the energies of light.

The Earth's consciousness is moving towards its original source within its own vibrational consciousness, so it may align itself with the rest of the universe. Within the next few years it will cleanse itself so it can make a quantum leap to a higher oscillation of vibration within the prisms of its own light the pattern that holds the earths consciousness within its own energy source.

When earth was first created from the sub atomic explosion of a star, it was filled with a pattern of light from which the star burst gave, the colours within this burst of energy is the basic structure to the life that earth sustains herself. It is this light and the colours within it that holds the evolution key to all life past, present and future and with each change of evolutionary consciousness the earths vibration and oscillation moves up the universal consciousness ladder always bringing new cycles and new changes not only for the inhabitants, but also to its geographical pattern.

The prisms of light within the earth's consciousness is filled with colours of greens, blues, yellow/gold and reds which gives it the diversity to form molecules of various forms of organisms. These energies gave the planet the tools to re create over billions of earthly years to that in which we see at present.

There have many changes in the evolution of the planet and its inhabitance over the cycles of years and now through another cycle it will change its pattern once again bringing it closer to its original source of oscillation and frequency. There have been many misalignments to the patterns of earths consciousness and it is still out of synchronisation to its original source, many changes have been made not from the consciousness of the earths energy but by mankinds destruction. There are many holes within the electromagnetic energy field of the earth's consciousness, but now it will begin another cleansing cycle and repair itself for the new cycle of energy consciousness that is to begin.

This will uplift the earth energy consciousness to a much bigger collective source so it can expand itself alongside other consciousness of other dimensional time/space realms. All these cycles of energy waves build themselves up to a grand scenario some bigger than others all depending on the cycle but the one we now await is the grandfather of them all a cycle of 311,040 years, 12 cycles of 25,920 years.

The smaller cycles are every 2,160 years then the second cycle is 25,920 years but the cycle of the grand slam is 311,040 which we are now approaching, then all universal consciousness in the whole of the meta-verse will come together in its new vibration of synchronisity, a new song shall be played throughout the universe forever changing the energy consciousness that will play a new tune through the universal orchestra which signals a great time of change. It is a tonal sound that is played throughout the universes so that every universal consciousness of energy can tune itself into the new song.

The earth had its biggest change of consciousness when the link of evolution took a quantum leap and brought forth the creation of homo sapient, it was from this period onwards that the earth's consciousness gradually became misaligned as it took on a slightly different form of nature. The collective consciousness of the homo sapient began draining the natural nature of the earth's energies, they became slower in their vibration and the tonal sound of her oscillation began to resonate in a different frequency shifting it a little out of tune to its orignal matrix.

The colours within the earth's consciousness that resonates within its pattern of light began to fade and has become jaded over numerous years and as mankind mutiplied the colours and vibration of the earths frequency slowed down and gradually got weaker. But now with a grand new cycle will help earth rise in her frequency and oscillation which will speed up her vibration and put light into the colours of her hue. This light will renew the oscillation of her tonal sound which will resonate to a much higher frequency so that a new song can be heard.

During the last cycle many new diseases were born this was due to the earth's living consciousness being out of sinc to its natural form when this occurs nature intervenes, in the past we have known about floods, the ice age and many other natural phenomenas creating new geography patterns on the planet this was necessary to rid herself of the unatural baggage it was carrying. In this grand cycle of change a new play has been created by the universal creator and new roles have been chosen, there will be new acts to the play with new possibilities leading to new probabilities for us all, it is up to all human beings to find their own role in this new enlightenment of creation and re create with their own universal consciousness into the big picture of change and bring about a balance of the dualities of nature. The more people that become aware of this great change of consciousness throughout our world and raise their own inner spiritual awareness the better for the planet and all those that exist upon her.

The change of this great cycle of consciousness is like an orchestra and all it needs is to be in tune with each other for the music to be played correctly, but for those who are not in tune or who are out of sync to the rest of universal consciousness it will be like diving into a pool of water and finding out that not much water is there, it will be a shock to the system..

It will be difficult for those who hold on to old concepts, old belief systems and old habitual patterns as their energy vibration will not be in alignment to the new vibration of the planet. So let us all bring our own light and help strengthen the universal consciousness of light to be brighter so that it can dispel the darkness we are existing in. It is now time for balance and more harmony to live and exist within the natural energies of all nature and not just by the desires of the human self.

The memory banks of consciousness is just that, it holds all that has been, all that is now and the potential of what is to come, we as human beings have that potential to change and to ride with ease into the new cycle of energy consciousness that is soon to be upon us, so we may look back to the memory banks of consciousness and see the positive change it holds.

The Word is Language Loss or Language Upgrade

The nature of our being is a process of intertwined forms of human behavior and senses. We are wired to have all these different functions simultaneously, resulting in one of the many ways that we communicate and express ourselves. In this manner we are able to, in a dual way manifest what we call personal behavior and social behavior. This has enabled man to be able to express himself in an artificial and natural way, be able to express his feelings and his thoughts. He can do so by writing poetry, painting or some form of art. Man can also communicate his thoughts, feelings and ideas by means of conventional and understandable formats. This seem to indicate that expression and communication are closely intertwined with each other in all forms of human behavior. If one speaks of the other, then the other one should be considered too.

Gelb says: "In order to communicate thoughts and feelings, there must be conventional system of signs or symbols which, when used by some persons, are understood by other persons receiving them. Communications under normal circumstances requires the presence of two(or more) persons, the one(s) who emit(s) and the one(s) who receive(s) the communication." It is important for us to understand the origins of the Word Alphabet ( phonetic writing), Grammatical man , and the origin of Language. In addition, we will explore the new, emerging, merging, Interconnected Chatspeak, Internet Slang and symbols, Instant Messaging, net shorthand, Web Acronyms languages.

Walter Ong sees computer language as something that represent human languages, Ong says that: "Computer languages, unlike human languages[English, Sanskrit, Malayalam, Mandarin Chinese, Twi or Shohone, Zulu, etc., do not grow out of the unconscious but directly out of consciousness. Computer language rules('grammar') are stated first and thereafter used, The 'rules' of grammar in natural human languages are used first and can be abstracted from usage and stated explicitly in words only with difficulty and never completely

The Language of Orality

The word is sound, that is, it comes out as a pronounced word, but it is sound. We are talking here about cultures that depend on orality than in writing. Before we became a typographic culture, we were an oral orientated society and culture. Sound or orality is dynamic and has power. Man has power to name things and to the oral man, 'words are the tools for the job of saying what you want to say'(Evans). We do not have to know a variety of the words to meet our needs. But we can approach our because the more words we know, the closer we come to expressing precisely what we want to.

Ong says that: "Without writing, words as such have no visual presence,even when the objects they represent are visual. They are sounds. You might 'call' them back - 'recall' them. But there is nowhere to 'look' for them. They have no focus and no trace (a visual metaphor, showing dependency on writing), not even a trajectory. They are occurrences, events." A vocabulary is a tool which one uses in formulating the important questions of life, the questions which must be asked before they can be answered. To a large extent, vocabulary shapes all the decisions we make. Most decisions, of course, are shaped by our emotions, by circumstances, and by the forces which may hold us back or urge us on.

These circumstances and forces are largely beyond our control. But our speech is a sort of searchlight that helps us to see these things more clearly and to see ourselves in relation to them. At least it helps us call things by their right names.(Rosa/Clark) According to Walter Ong: "To learn what a primary oral culture is and what the nature of our problem is regarding such a culture, it helps first to reflect on the nature of sound itself as sound. All sensation takes place in time, but sound has a special relationship to time unlike that of the other fields that register human sensation.

Sound exists only when it is going out of existence. It is not simply perishable but essentially evanescent, and it is sensed as evanescent. When I pronounce the word 'permanence ', by the time I get to the '-pence'. the 'perma-' is gone, and has to be gone." Once uttered, the word helps to further the idea it described. Words are one of the major means that enables us to adjust to all situations. With a broad based word knowledge of vocabulary we begin to see how we acquire vocabulary and intelligence, and that ability of being able to increase our vocabulary, this surely reflects on our intellectual progress.

Mnemonics

How do we retain what we say without the writing process? As we have pointed out above, words disappear and are not stored as they are in books. It is true that we use words to adjust to all situations, and we are enabled deal with our lives if we have better control of the word, in the process this helps us better control and successfully adjust to changing life and phenomena. Havelock explains how we are able to do so: "Think memorable thoughts. In a primary oral culture, to solve effectively the problem of retaining and retrieving carefully articulated thought, you have to do your thinking in mnemonic patterns, shaped for ready oral recurrence.

Your thought must come into being in heavily rhythmic, balanced patterns, in repetitions or antithesis, in alliterations and assonances, in epithetic and other formulary expressions, in standard thematic settings(the assembly, the meal,the duel, the hero's 'helper', and so on), in proverbs which are constantly heard by everyone so that they come to mind readily, or in other mnemonic form. Serious thought is intertwined with memory systems(Which we briefly touched-up upon above in the introduction). Mnemonic needs determine even syntax."

Mnemonics means 'assisting or intended to assist the memory or programming code that is easy to remember'. It can also be seen as the process or technique of improving or developing the memory. The more sophisticated orally patterned thought is, the more it is likely to be marked by set expressions skillfully used. We learn gather words and know them through speaking and hearing others speak. Havelock's 'Preface to Plato' and fictional works such as Chinua Achebe's novel 'No Longer at Ease', which directly draws on Ibo oral tradition in West Africa,alike provide abundant instances of thought patterns of orally educated characters who move in these oral, mnemonically tooled grooves, as the speakers reflect, with high intelligence and sophistication, on the situations in which they find themselves involved. The law itself in oral culture is enshrined in formulaic sayings, proverbs, which are not mere jurisprudential decorations, but themselves constitute the law. A judge in an oral culture is often called on to articulate sets of relevant proverbs out of which he can produce equitable decisions in the cases under formal litigation before him.(Ong '78)

In oral culture, to think through something in non-formulaic, non-patterned, non-mnemonic terms, even if it were possible, would be waste of time, for such thought, once worked through, could never be recovered with any effectiveness, as it could be with the aid of writing. It would not be abiding knowledge but simply a passing thought, however complex. In oral culture, experience is intellectualized mnemonically.(Ong) In the past early centuries, savants living in a particular culture that knew some literacy, still carried an overwhelmingly massive oral residue, memory bulks so large whenever they used them as part of the power of their minds. The pleasure one feels as ones vocabulary develops this also comes with increased power and knowledge on oneself. For words are to mind what such actions are to the body.

The Alphabet and Its Affects

What the phonetic alphabet has done,is that it has become more than a writing system. All of Western science, mathematics, jurisprudence, politics, economics, social organization, and religion are intimately linked to the alphabet. This means that the phonetic alphabet is a system for organizing information. The alphabet has contributed to the development of codified law, monotheism, abstract science, deductive logic and individualism, just to name a few. The alphabet is one of the first things children learn once they are able to speak. The knowledge of the alphabet is a gateway to knowledge.

Logan says: "The twenty-six letters of English (or Roman) alphabet are the keys not only to reading and writing, but also to a whole philosophy of organizing information. We use the letters of the alphabet to order the words in our dictionaries, the articles in our encyclopedia, and the books in our libraries. These systematic approaches to coordinating information based on the medium of the alphabet have suggested other forms of classification and codification that are part and parcel of Western science, law, engineering and social organization."

The Alphabet, as a from of writing, it is not the only one. There is Logographic writing, in which each spoken word os represented by its own visual sign, which denotes or depicts the word,symbolically or pictorially. This dates back to the Sumer of 3100 B.C. and is still the basis for the present form of Chinese writing.

Walter Ong made these following observations about the Alphabet:

Ong says that the first early scripts were from Mesopotamiam: 3,500 BC(I wonder why he left out Cuneiform writing); Egyptians Hieroglyphics: 3,000 BC; Indus Valley(India): 3,000 BC; Chinese: 1,500 BC; Mycenean Linear B )proto-Greek): 1,200 BC. Ong further says: "Scripts match symbols to objects(both physical objects ad conceptual objects. The symbol-to-object my be complicated by more than one step. For example, the Chinese character which depicts 2 trees don to symbolize two trees but the concept of woods of forest. Abstract pictures of a mother and child together present the concept good or contented. The sound ofor the word woman is 'ny'; for shild ; for good 'hau '. Thus there is no relationship between the pictorial symbol and the spoken word. Chinese can write write ideogram, few can write the spoken Chinese words they understand, and that to become significantly learned in Chinese writing system normally takes some 20 years.

Another form of writing is the Syllabic system, in which each individual syllable in the spoken language is phonetically coded with its unique visual sign. Syllabaries lie somewhere between logographic and alphabetic writing systems. Alphabets code each individual phoneme,while syllabaries code each individual syllable, and logographic systems depict an entire word with one sign. the phonetic alphabet is the most recent or the three writing systems. It is the most economical, with the fewest number of signs, and hence is the most abstract. It is these properties of the alphabet that have influenced the development of Western culture and contributed to what we shall call the "Alphabet effect ".(Logan)

The effects of the alphabet and the abstract, logical, systematic thought that it encouraged explain why science began in the West and not the East, despite the much greater technological sophistication of the Chinese ... the inventors of metallurgy, irrigation systems, animal harnesses, paper, ink, printing,movable type, gunpowder, rockets, porcelain and silk. Credit must also be given to monotheism and codified law,an essential building-block of science. Phonetic writing was essential to the intellectual development in the West. No such development occurred in the East.(Logan)

We really do not know how words are stored in our minds, but there does seem to be a sort of filing system. Words cannot be separated from ideas. They interact. The idea comes up from our subconscious clothed in words. Everyone has tried to remember a word and have been unable to. Sometimes it is a common word, one that we know we know. Try as hard as we may, it never comes when we want it. Out of the blue, later when we do not want it, it comes to us readily in our minds. Our no knowing how how this filing system works, the fact of the matter is that, once we master a word, it is connected to our minds with scores of other words.

Whenever we acquire a vocabulary, it becomes a tool which one uses in formulating important questions of life. To a large extent, vocabulary shapes all decisions we make. Our speech is a sort of searchlight that helps us to see these things more clearly and t see ourselves in relation to them. At least it helps us call things by the names we know and have given them. We have to understand ow information is being communicated, so that this will enable us to understand the media. It is very important to study how the alphabet, independent of the spoken languages it transcribes or the information it makes available, has its own impact. We need to understand the way in which information is mediated and delivered. We need to study the medium as a "message" and the messages that the medium transmits that a full appreciation of cultural and historical processes can emerge

Grammatical Effects on Man

Information is a word which has never been easy to pin down. In its most familiar sense today, information is news,intelligence, facts, and ideas that are acquired and passed on as knowledge. It is important to know that the word was used with a more active, constructive meaning, as something which gives a certain form or character to matter, or to the mind; a force which shapes conduct, trains, instructs, inspires or guides.

Jeremy Campbell says: "Information theory shows that there are good reasons why the forces of antichance are as universal as the forces of chance., even though entropy has been presented a the overwhelmingly more powerful. The proper metaphor for the life process, may not be a pair of rolling dice or a spinning roulette wheel, but the sentences of a language, conveying information that is predictable and partly unpredictable,. These sentences are generated by rules which make much out of little, producing a boundless wealth of meaning from a finite store of words; they enable language to be familiar yet surprising, constrained yet unpredictable within its constraints.

Sense and order, the theory says, can prevail against nonsense and chaos. the world need not regress towards the simple, the uniform, and the banal, but may advance in the direction of richer and more complex structure, physical and mental. Life, like language, remains "grammatical." The classical view of entropy implied in that structure is the exception and confusion the rule. The theory of information suggests instead that order is entirely natural: grammatical man inhabits a grammatical universe.(Campbell) The sift from orality to writing intimately interrelates with more psychic and social developments than we are aware of. Developments in food production, in trade, in political organization, in religious institutions, in technological skills, in educational practices, in means of transportation, in family organization, and in other areas of human life all play their own distinctive roles.

In treating the technologizing of the word, sometimes one gets the impression as if we are talking about its nature as being that of 'verbal communication'. According to Ong, McLuhan talked about The 'Medium is the Message' , which Ong says that it is not quite the 'message'. Ong writes: Human Communications, verbal and other, differs from the 'medium' model most basically in that it demands anticipated feedback in order to take place at all. In the medium model, the message is moved from sender-position to receiver-position. In real human communication, the sender has to be not only in the sender position but also in the receiver position before he/she can send anything.

Words are modifications of a more-than-verbal situation. I have to sense something in the other's mind to which my own utterance can relate. Human communication is never one way. Always, it not only calls for response but is shaped in its very form and content by anticipated response." In order for us to understand human communications and media, we have to understand what the process is the process that takes place for communication to happen. To formulate anything one must have another person or other persons already 'in mind'. This is the paradox of human communication. Communication is intersubjective.

The media model is not. There is no adequate model in the physical universe for this operation of consciousness, which is distinctively human and which signals the capacity of human beings to form true communities wherein a person shares the person, interiority, intersubjectively. Willingness to live with the 'media' model of communication shows chirographic conditioning. First, chirographic cultures regard speech as more specifically informational than do oral cultures, where speech is more performance orientated, more a way of doing something to someone.(Ong)

Modern studies in the shift from orality to literacy and the sequels of literacy, print and the electronic processing of verbalization, make more and more apparent some of the ways in which this evolution has depended on writing.

The language of the Internet

Language is Not Changing or Maybe it is

The Internet,is by far the greatest power overall that has the ability to change public perception. The net has changed the way private citizens perceive their ability to understand and affect the global system. anyone that cruising and surfing the net has the ability to interconnect with anything and anyone around the world. The real power of the Internet comes from one being able to interact with ones peers.

The net is not only dealing with sending e-mails to and fro, most of the other interaction taking place on the web had to do with 'conferencing and posting'. These groups are made of "newsgroups". Individual users post "articles" into a particular group. Users reads the postings and responds by joining the discussion with their own postings. A board is broken up into groups called "conferences," and new discussions within the conference are called "topics" to which users post 'responses." All these activities occur in what is now called "cyberspace"- a territory that does not submit to any conventional boundaries or hierarchies.

Generally speaking,when we talk about "language and the Internet", we are referring to language issues that arise in constructing natural language to be carried across the Internet(e.g., e-mail, chat, the content portion of web pages). When people talk about "Web languages", they usually mean coding systems(e.g., HTM JavaScript) for constructing Web pages. At the intersection of these domain is the problem of figuring out how to design search procedures and coding systems that enable end users to employ natural language input(typically a word or phrase) to locate information posted somewhere in cyberspace on one or more of the billions of Web pages that exist.(Naomi Baron).

There are many other words that constitute Internet language and which describe important parts that function on the Net. What is of interest for this article as it pertains to language, is what is called "Internet", of "Net Shorthand", "Chat Speak," "Initialisms," "Telegraphese," "Internet Jargon," and so forth. It is also interesting to note that there are intellectuals who rejoicing and celebrating the birth of this 'new language'. Some say it is good for the English language as stated by the Science Daily in one of its articles Science News: 'Always On' Impacts Personal Relationships, More Than It Impacts The Written Language - "Instant messaging, Blogs, Wikis, Social networking sites, and Cell Phones, all of these allow us to communicate with each other - wherever, whenever.

Many people speculate that online and mobile technologies have widely impacted written language, especially that of teenagers and young adults. Naomi baron, a Linguistics Professor at American Universities says that it is not so. Technologies such as e-mail, Instant Messaging, and Text Messaging aren't sounding the death knell for written language as we know it," Baron said. "In fact, studies in the US and UK and Sweden all report that teenagers have a rather clear understanding that 'school writing' is different from the messages they send to friends. Baron states that our technology has influenced our reading, writing, speaking and listening behaviors.

She thinks that we should concern ourselves less about the effects of technology in our writing and focus instead on how it might be changing our interpersonal relationships. Baron writes: "However, new online and mobile technologies increase the range of options at our disposal for choosing when we want to interact with whom. We check caller ID on our cell phones before taking the call. We block people on IM or Facebook. And we forward e-mail or text messages to people for whom they were never intended.

Although ignoring calls, e-mails and messages on our cell phones and laptops may potentially affect our relationships in a negative way, such behavior isn't always a bad thing.(!!) This does not jive with the assertion that cyber language distorts language and/or not communication. Being dependent on our new and emerging technologies, and their technique of new communication taking over our language, which a few people even know, is really disturbing.

English In Deep Trouble?

Science Daily in an article dubbed "Language Development Via the Internet" .. The advent of new language styles and forms end\gendered by the Internet, and related communication developments such as SMS messaging should be greeted with delight. This is the greatest development of the English Language since the advent of the printing press in the middle ages. When people notice a growth of informality in language use,their concerns center around whether this will cause a general deterioration in the quality of language.

The prophets of doom emerge every time a new technology influences language. of course - they gathered when printing was introduced in the 15th century, as well as when the telephone was introduced in the 19th, and when broadcasting came along in the 20th; and they gathered again when it was noticed that the INternet writing broke several rules of formal standard English - in such areas as punctuation, capitalization and spelling.

All that has happened, in fact, is that the language's resources for the expression of informality in writing have hugely increased - something which has not been seen in English since the middle ages, and which was largely lost when standard English." Crystal feels like we should celebrate this new language 'in a creative way', then he advices: "There is of course, a role for educationalist in teaching children which style is the most appropriate and where.(!!!)

G. Pullum commenting on what Phaln responded to on their comment exchange pn his Language Log Plaza that: "His comments(Phaln's) made on some sort of slangy stuff on the web made for a bad idea for grammarians seeking information about English: "I came to me that the English language was in deep trouble when people start saying "rotfl" and "lol" in person. I've heard a half-hour radio discussion about it on the BBC World Service(in the middle of the night).

It seems likely that at least some people really do think English might be altered radically by infusion of e-mail abbreviations for phrases like "[I'm] rolling on the floor laughing" or "I'm] laughing out loud" into regular spoken English. Don't worry. nothing radical or even slightly significant will happen. Suppose, say, "rotfl" (pronounced "rotfull"") became quite common in speech(which seems unlikely..) Interjections are so unimportant to the fabric of language that they are almost completely ignored in grammars. They have no syntactic properties at all - you pop one in when the spirit moves you. Don't worry about English. It will do fine. Not even floods of e-mail-originated phrases entering the lexicon would change it in any significant way."

Post Technosized Language

A much more further analysis and break-down of the Lnaguage of the Internet will be done in a second article from this one. Suffice to say that we shall have to look at its Linguistic Perspectives; The Language of the Email; The Language of Chat Groups; The Language of Virtual Worlds and the Overall Language of the Web. Some people think that the New Language of the Internet is not affecting our present language. The are others who say that it is and the Internet is even affecting our behaviors.

Dan Crystal wanted to know, form Shawn Wilbur, what it was like to be a regular citizen of the Internet or netizen? Shawn replied: "For me it is the work of few hours a day, carved up into minutes and carried on from before dawn until long after dark. I venture out onto the Net when I wake in the night,while coffee water boils, or bathwater runs, between manuscript sections oar student appointments.

Or I keep network connection open in the background while I do other work. Once or twice a day, I log on for longer periods of time,mostly engage in more demanding realtime communication, but I find that is not enough. Virtual community is this work, this immersion, and also the connection it represents. Sometimes it is realtime communication. More often it is asynchronous and mostly solitary, a sort of textual flirtation that only occasionally aims at any direct confrontation of voices or bodies.

Dan crystal in his other exerpt titled "Addicted to the Internet" shares this piece: "I wake up at 3 a.m. to go to the bathroom and stop to check your email on the way back to bed. You sign off and your screen says your on for three days and 45 minutes. You placed the refrigerator beside your computer. You say "scroll up" when someone asks what was it you said. All of your friends have at @ in their names. You tell the cab driver you live at http://123.elm.street/house/bluetrim.html. You check your e-mail. It says 'no new messages'. So you check it again. Your phone bill comes to your doorstep in a box. Our task is to investigate the linguistic properties of the 'electronic revolution'. and to take a view whether the way in which we use language on the internet is becoming different from our previous linguistic behavior that it might genuinely be described as revolutionary

It would seem like the language is changing how we write, speak, behave and perceive. This new technology is not only stretching our minds and bodies ad infinitum, but it is now pushing the old ways of expression, behavior, sensing, thought perceptions and language in all directions like nerve ends.

Maybe it is the change we are not used to or one that is out of our understanding, but it is a change worth noting and observing that language has be stretched and spread in all the directions the Internet goes in, and this, in of itself, means that language has been affected immeasurable and we are still trying to cope with what it means to have our perceptions, thoughts, behaviors, and languages changed and affected and strewn all over the ends of the continuous reaches of the Web.

Technology has made our language usage and facilitation to be used through its technique of spreading and developing endlessly out of our consciousness and awareness. It would seem like the Internet is not only making the word to be utilized efficiently, it has totally changed it and technologized it. It is this issue that raises concern as to whether this is the death of language as we know it or the upgrading of the language as we know it.

To understand on-line culture, though, we release our transportation and conduit assumptions because they are no longer functional. We move again, to a listening model. As effective listeners have known all along, to "receive' a message, you cannot be just a receptacle; instead, you reach out to meet the message - the idea, the meaning, the feeling - at least halfway.

The listening self is in motion, taking action, traveling, connecting, accessing. While our culture has become more computer-saturated, we've noticed important clues that these newer forms of communication and listening. Although many metaphors in these early stages of a new technology upon the old directness assumptions that are most easily recognized by written messages ("mail,""bulletin boards," etc.), increasingly the medium is morphing into re-oralized forms ("chat" rooms," "discussion groups," etc.). Ong recognized this as an implication of "secondary orality," the developmental stage of human life that extends our former emphasis on literacy

The electronic transformation of verbal expression has both deepened the commitment of the word to space initiated by writing intensified by print and has brought consciousness to a new age of secondary orality. Although the full relationship of the electronically processed word to the orality-literacy polarity with which this book concerns itself is too vast a subject to be considered in its totality here, some few points need to made. Despite what is sometimes said, electronic devices are not eliminating printed books but are producing more of them.

Electronically taped interviews produce 'talked' books and articles by the thousands which would never have seen print before taping was possible. The new medium here reinforces the old, but of course transform it because it fosters a new self-consciously informal style, since typographic folk believe it should normally be formal. Moreover, as earlier noted, composition on computer terminals is replacing older forms of typographic composition, so that soon virtually all printing will be done in one way or another with the aid of electronic equipment. and of course,information of al sorts electronically gathered and/or processed makes its way into print to swell the typographic output.

Finally, the sequential processing and spatializing of the word, initiated by writing and raised to a new order of intensity by print, is further intensified by the computer, which maximizes commitment of the word to space and to (electronic) local notion and optimizes analytic sequentiality by making it virtually instantaneous(Ong)

To say that a great many changes in the psyche and in culture connect with the passage from 'orality to writing' is no to make writing(and or sequel, print) the sole cause of all the changes. The connection is not a matter or reductionism or relationism. The shift from orality to writing intimately interrelates with more psychic and social developments than than we have yet noted.

Developments in food production, in trade, in political organization, in religious institutions, in technological skills, in educational practices, in means of transportation, in family organization, and in other areas of human life all play their own distinctive roles. But most of at these developments, and indeed very likely one of them have themselves been affected, often at great depth, by the shift from orality to literacy and beyond, as many of them have in turn affected the shift.(Ong)

In treating the technologizing of the word, for the most part the term "media" has not been explored fully in tis article The reason is that the term can give a false impression of the nature of verbal communication, and of other human communication as well. think of a 'medium' of communication or or of 'media' of communication suggests that communication is a pipeline transfer of units of material called 'information' from one place to another.

From one end of the pipe the 'information' proceeds to the other end, where someone decodes it(restores its propers size and shape) and puts it in his or her own box-like container called the mind. This model obviously has something to do with human communication, but, on close inspection, very little, and it distorts the act of communication beyond recognition. Hence, McLuhan's wry book title 'The Medium is the Message' (not quite the 'Message').

Human communication, verbal and other, differs from the 'medium' model most basically in that it demands anticipated feedback in order to take place at all. In the medium model, the message is moved from the sender to-position to receiver-position. In real human communication, the sender has to be not only in the the sender-position but also in the receiver position, before he or she can can send anything. To speak I have to be already in communication with the mind I am to address before I start speaking.

I can be in touch perhaps through past relationships, by an exchange of glances, by an understanding with the third person who has brought me and my interlocutor together, or in any of countless other ways (words are modifications of a more-than-verbal situation.) I have to sense something in the other's mind to which my own utterance can relate. Human communication is never one way. Always, it not only calls for response but is shaped in its very form and content by anticipated response.(Ong)

The words that are being spoken about above emanate from Chirographic writing and later, typographic writing. Cryurchin writes that he is interested in the varieties of resistance to the digitization of the written word, from its perceived "unnaturalness" to the belief it might be doing us harm, making us stupid. We are embodied beings and approach tangible objects as more 'natural' than virtual ones due to the ways in which we touch the world; we interact with written objects differently when their content, the words, the script, changes body. We need to understand that in order for us to to understand how we are affected in our ability to read across different medium, and the effects of each medium is in the end of it all, a technologized word, which we need to understand how is its inner technique affecting us, our speech and perceptions.

Literacy and Orality In Our times

The word has already been technologized made easy and user-friendly for the ordinary user of earth denizen. In short, where primary orality promotes spontaneity because the analytic reflectiveness implemented by writing is unavailable, secondary orality promotes spontaneity because through analytic reflection we have decided that spontaneity is a good thing. We plan our happenings carefully to be sure that they are thoroughly spontaneous.(Ong)

It is in this way then that electronics has simplified efficiency from writing on paper and using the same approach and discipline of writing to efficiency of creating the analytical spontaneity that one applied on paper, but this time, the writer 'carefully makes sure that they are spontaneous. Putting words, thoughts and ideas on paper in composition of writing has just been made much easier by the computer or electronics and technique. The Word has been technologized, and our language and speech have changed, and all this has happened to create spontaneity and efficiency and a new language of communication that goes along with it.

Techne: Technologizing Of The Word Through Writing


Walter Ong writes: "The English profession has always been concerned with how to create and interpret a written text. ... Verbalization via texts and readers contrasts obviously with oral verbalization, the ancient and still basic form of verbalization. We have recently learned a great deal about the psychodynamics of orality, how oral verbalization, in pure preliterate form or in residual form within writing cultures, structures both thought processes and expression.

But, strangely enough, those interested in writing and reading processes, either from a practical or a theoretical point of view, including the many and often brilliant structuralist and phenomenological analysts of textuality, have done little to enlarge understanding of these processes by contrasting writing and reading processes in-depth oral and oral-aural processes. What I propose to do here: to review the orality in our long cultural past in order to bring an understanding of it to bear on the present literary and para-literry situation.

... For example, Reflecting on these, gives some idea of the ways in which the oral and writing traditions have been interacting through not only our distant past but also our rather recent past. Throughout, scholars appear to have been quite unaware of the oral-literacy contrasts and of the gradual inroads of literacy upon orality. No one seems to have noticed as the teaching of rhetoric, which in it Greek original, techne rhetorike, means public speaking, imperciptibly became more and more, over the centuries, the teaching of writing. Earlier generations took their own resifual orality for granted, so much so that they really had not even thought or orality explicitly at all as a state of culture or of consciousness.."

We take it for granted that but literacy has changed everything. We could remember things precisley. Literacy allowed extension of thought into complex design. It is essential to philosophy, literature, science, engineering and technology. Literacy is the platform of modern civilization, including the Internet. We forget forget what it was like before literacy, when oral communications was the dominant mode of communication.

This one can see in the citation made by Ong as to how that literacy took shape, formed itself into what we call literacy today. What he really makes us aware of is the fact that writing is the result of techne rhetorike, which is public speaking and was responsible for the teaching of writing. Committing the word to and making it a technology was the transference of orality into technical rhetoric and and finally into writing. so, in a sense, this enabled us, today, that information technology properties might be applied to the task of structuring data in unstructured environments, e.g., crawling the open web.

So that, if we look at it deeper, we learn from Ong that "oral memory is achieved through repetition and cliche`. In modern database parlance, words are normalized rather than denormalized, a technique still employed for efficient processing. Ong contrasts more properties of oral memory. They define the lifeworld of thought prior to structuring through literacy. "The very reflectiveness of writing - enforced by the slowness of the writing process as compared to oral delivery as well as by isolation of the writer as compared to the oral performer - encourages growth of consciousness out of the unconscious.."

Ong says that even a little literacy restructures consciousness. Writing can be credited or blamed for a rise in self-awareness. It is interesting to note that the web is recreating the interactivity of readers and writers, while preserving the advantages of written memory.

Oralityis not "pre-literate." Orality is a domain of knowing unto itself, capable of achieving complex design. All reading and writing is transformed in the brain back to the original speech utterances. Literacy is founded on orality. Ong calls orality "natural" and writing "technological". this distinction is the only point on which some other distinctions that are raied. for one, Heidegeerean who postulates that speech without writing is technological- tool-like. Speech is the processing of symbols, embodied sounds.

We are learning much about the way thought extends beyond our brains into the environment of lifeworld. We should also remember how McLuhan asserted that our present technologies and and heir emerging media and medium extend man further from himself, thoughts and ideas, and through the Web makes them viral akin to the extension of our nervous system and our conscious consciousness.

We are technological to the core, not only in a digital sense, but the sense that we are also tool-makers, and speech and writing falls into that category. Literacy is built on orality and post literacy will likely be built on literacy. No doubt, post-literacy is what we call , I would postulate, viral streaming, interfacing, inter/intra-connecting, posting, merging and submerging , whilst all along being orally literate and still utilizing writing as what can be called the post-literacy time- the time of the Web and cyberspace. This change in ways of communicating from Oral traditions to the technological society of the Internet and post-lierate period, we can see that the technologized word, as committed to and through writing, has indeed changed our speech patterns and all forms of human perceptions and ways and means of communicating.

Narrative Collapse

The technologizing of the word has had many ramifications as to the way we are communicating with one another today in a myriad ways. Just as much as we are able to connect and , merge and submerge with the ease of a pro, our ways of communicating with one another(person to person) have been eroded and replaced by the language and words of communication that come with the system's jargon of making it work. this, according to Douglass Ruskoff has contributed to the "Narrative Collapse. What was looked forward to as coming "Future Shock" has caught up with us in the 1990s that Rushkoff says we are still leaning forward in the era of the long predicted coming Future-shock, 'right up to the 2000 and the ultimate calendar flip into the next millennium.'

So Rushkoff writes:

"Together the stries helped us construct a narrative experience of our lives, our nation, our culture, and our faith. We adopted an entirely story-like way of experiencing and talking about the world. through the lens of a narrative, America isn't just a place we live but is a journey of a people through time. apple ins't a smart phone manufacturer, but two guys in a garage who had a dream about how creative people may someday gain command over technology. Democracy is not a a methodology for governing, but the force tha twill liberate humanity. Pollution is not an ongoing responsibility of industry, but the impending catastrophic climax of human civilization

Revisiting the Origin Of Consciousness And How Writing Structures That Co

The Web Is The Extension Of Our Consciousness

The new technological gadgets structure our consciousness since we not only read from them, but we write. The Hub above is about how writing strictures our consciousness, and I extend this theme to say and show how the new technological gizmos and their techniques(writing included) do structure our consciousness in ways . But, before we even look at those, I would like to cite some notes from Julian Jaynes about The Problems Of Consciousness wherein he writes:

"Men have been conscious of the problem of consciousness almost since consciousness began. And each age has described consciousness in terms of its own theme and concerns. In the gold age of Greece, when men traveled about in freedom while slaves did the work, consciousness was as free as that. Heraclitus, in particular, called it an enormous space whose boundaries, even by traveling along every path, could never be found out. A millennium later, Augustine among the cavern hills of Carthage was astonished at the "mountains and hills of my high imaginations," "the plains and caves and caverns of my memory" with its recesses of "manifold and spacious chambers, wonderfully furnished with unnumberable stores.". Note how the metaphors of the mind are the world it perceives.

"There is not much we can do about metaphors except to state that that is precisely what they are.

Now, originally,this search into the nature of consciousness was known as the mind-body problem, heavy with its ponderous philosophical solutions.But since the theory of evolution, it has bared itself into a more scientific question. It has become the problem of the origin of the mind, or, more specifically, the origin of consciousness in evolution. Where can this subjective experience which we introspect upon, as noted above in the introduction as "introcosm", this constant companion of hosts of associations, hopes, fears, affections, knowledges, colors, smells, toothaches, thrills, tickles, pleasures, distresses, and desires-where and how in the evolution could all this wonderful tapestry of inner experience have evolved? How can we derive this inwardness out of mere matter? And if so, when?" Then Jaynes further explores consciousness as follows:

"When asked the question, what is Consciousness? We become conscious of consciousness. And most of us take this consciousness of consciousness to be what consciousness is. This is not true.

"In being conscious of consciousness, we feel it is the most self-evident thing imaginable. We feel it is the defining attribute of all our waking states, our moods and affections, our memories, our thoughts, attentions, and volitions. We feel comfortably certain that consciousness is the basis of concepts, of learning and reasoning, of thought and judgement, and that it is so because it records and stores our experiences as they happen, allowing us to introspect on them and learn from them at will. we are also quite conscious that all this wonderful set of operations and contents that we call consciousness is located somewhere in the head.

"On critical examination, all these statements are false. They are the costume that consciousness has been masquerading in for centuries. They are the misconceptions that have prevented a solution to the problem of the origin of consciousness. But let us go further.

"Consciousness is a much smaller part of our mental life than we are conscious of, because we cannot be conscious of what we are not conscious of. How simple that is to say; how difficult to appreciate! It is like asking a flashlight in a dark room to search around for something that does not have any light shining upon it. The flashlight, since there is light in what ever direction it turns, would have to conclude that there is light everywhere. And s, consciousness can seem to pervade all mentality when actuality it does not.

"The timing of consciousness is also an interesting question. When we are awake, are conscious all the time? We think so. In fact, we are sure so! I shut my eyes and even if I try not to think, consciousness still streams on, a great river of content in a succession of different conditions which I have been taught to call, thoughts, images, memories, interior dialogues, regrets,wishes, resolves, all interweaving with the constantly changing pageant of exterior sensations of which I am selectively aware. Always continuity. Certainly this is the 'feeling'. And whatever we're doing, we feel that our very self, our deepest of deep identity, is indeed this continuing flow that only ceases in sleep between remembered dreams. This is our experience. and many thinkers have taken this spirit of continuity to be the place to start from in philosophy, the very ground of certainty which no one can dout. Cogito, ergo sum (I think, therefore I am).

"In our flashlight analogy, the flashlight would be conscious of being on only when it is on. Though huge gaps of time occurred, providing things were generally the same, it would seem to the flashlight itself that the light had been continuously on. We are thus conscious less of the time than we think, because we cannot be conscious of when we are not conscious.

"And the feeling of a great uninterrupted stream of rich inner experiences, now slowly gliding through dreamy moods, now tumbling in excited torrents down gorges of precipitous insight, or surging evenly through our nobler days, is what it is on this page, a metaphor for how subjective consciousness seems to subjective consciousness."

As I have been reiterating throughout the Hub above, the technologizing of the word, which when used to write, structures our consciousness. Through reading the musings of Jaynes above, our consciousness makes us seem to be aware of consciousness as consciousness which which we are conscious of. Well, with the emergent technologies which are connected to the viral stream, they dovetail neatly with our our streaming consciousness that this contributes to the structuring of our consciousness as per the techniques of the new technologies, with their embedded techniques, and facilitating for streaming on the Web, as do our our consciousness remain and are in a constant flux and flow of streaming. In this way, our consciousness is extended by the very nature and flow of the viral stream. Our consciousness is conditioned and, controlled and molded by the techniques of the technology embedded in the viral soup of the web.

Understanding Consciously Our Existential and Present Reality

The Field: How to Access the Wisdom of The Collective Consciousness

At times, we have experiences of profound individual or collective connections with other people without even having spoken to them. We somehow know that there is more than verbal interaction, that there is the ‘More’. This introductory article explores the Field of connections by giving some examples of this Field and language to describe it.

Sometimes we find ourselves in-the-zone.. We find that we excel at things we do well when we are in-the-zone. There is a flow and effortlessness to our actions. It is almost as if we lose ourselves as a person and we become what we do: the teacher becomes one with the subject and with the classroom, the manager knows exactly what to say to whom in what moment, the mechanic knows what the problem is when he takes a quick look at the car, the runner experiences her runner’s high or the dancer becomes the dance.

Occasionally we find ourselves in-the-zone collectively: a sports team, a team meeting or a group of friends shooting the breeze. It is when we are in a moment that we “don’t want to end” because of the thrill of what is happening, knowing we are in a connection that would be difficult to find on our own. It is often related to a particular group of people or a particular task.

These in-the-zone experiences are familiar to most people. We don’t quite know what an in-the-zone experience really is or what makes it happen, but that does not make it any less real. It is a powerful experience, an experience of being one with another thing or person or group of people. At the moment we are in it, we are often unaware. Indeed if we take a moment to glimpse it while it is happening, it is often “gone.” The realization comes afterwards. The feeling is undeniable.

The More

A related experience – perhaps somewhat less familiar to people – is the experience of being part of the More. It is like the in-the-zone experience in that we don’t quite know how it works, how we get there, what it is. Being part of the More is not only being one with something or some one else, but it goes a step further. It is knowing and experiencing that this feeling of being one is part of a larger Oneness.

Being part of the More is when on the one hand we have our own experience of whatever it is that we experience – being in-the-zone or not – and at the same time we realize that the experience is part of something else, something More, something beyond ourselves. Another way of putting it: we have the experience and at the same time we are aware that whatever we experience is something bigger than ourselves. These individual experiences of the More, together form the energy field of connections.

Although many of us have experiences like this, it is hard to make sense of them. They are often fleeting. We don’t hold on to them or talk about them. We don’t quite know what to do with them or how and where to place them in our world. It is a bit like making a jigsaw puzzle, and after completing the puzzle yet finding pieces left over that clearly are an extension of this puzzle and at the same time the extension is seemingly just an incomplete fragment. We often put the left over puzzle pieces aside without paying much attention to them, because literally they do not fit in our picture. And yet these additional pieces form the beginning of a new puzzle, which we cannot complete alone because other people hold other pieces of that puzzle as extensions to their own puzzle. All these extensions together form a new puzzle. These extension puzzle pieces together with our completed pictures will give a picture of the More. Experiencing the More is somehow knowing that my extension puzzle pieces make sense with other people’s extension pieces.

"Obviously, it is a bit of a challenge to describe the Field because our familiar vocabulary is not quite adequate to describe our experiences. We often label these moments with words like coincidence, intuition, premonition, synchronicity, telepathy, serendipity, psychic, mystery, or magic. With these labels we often make these experiences both individual and exceptional; individual in the sense that they we believe they stand on their own and exceptional in the sense that they fall outside the normal range of our experience. When we are in the Field, these experiences are actually the norm if we take time to notice and stay in this zone. Like our puzzle with those extra pieces, we can then begin to see how these moments are connected to each other and a bigger unfolding picture emerges.

As we become more familiar with the Field, we begin to notice how these individual experiences of the More are actually connected to each other. It is as if there is some unknown radio frequency, which normally is surrounded by loud static, but when the conditions are exactly right the reception actually becomes loud and clear. A new world of discovery opens for us.

Noticing The More

There are a couple of very concrete examples that come to mind, which offer illustrations of how this More becomes an energy field of connections–those extra puzzle pieces that somehow find each other. A number of years ago, I directed a number of 10-day group relations conferences. Generally speaking, in these experiential conferences, participants study their own group dynamics with the help of specially trained consultants. In a series of group meetings the consultants and the group members try to pay attention to how our unconscious behavior influences group dynamics, particularly related to leadership and authority issues.

In this particular conference, I decided that the small groups (the home group throughout the conference) would be formed in such a way that participants of the conference self-selected their groups in silence. The instruction was given to wander around the room and to connect with people somehow, and to form three groups of about eight people. In this fluid process, people silently sensed their way through the room and somehow gravitated towards each other until each participant eventually “decided” to morph into a group. A pre-assigned pair of consultants also participated in this process in a similar way until they found their way to the group they would work with.

Immediately after this process, people worked together in these groups and also talked about why they thought they were in the group they were in. Individuals articulated why they made their choices, but they were mostly personal and individual reasons. Many people could speak about feeling a bond towards one or two other people in the group, but no one had hunches about why this groupwas together.

After working together for a week – in two of the three groups some clarity emerged around underlying themes that connected the people in the group to each other and revealed a deeper “why” to their silent choices. In one group, it appeared that all the participants were currently in a period of celibacy in their lives, for a whole variety of different reasons (breaking up with partners, religious reasons, illness). And the two male consultants that worked with them were perceived to be the most virile and expressively sexual members of the staff. In another group, there was great difficulty in the group. There were challenges in how the participants worked with each other, how the consultants worked together, and how the consultants worked with the group. Eventually, it appeared that every single person in the group was in an inter-racial relationship with a partner from a different country other than their own. In parallel, the consultant pair represented this core collective identity of the group: a black woman from the Caribbean working with a white man from the US. Members of the group did not only find each other, they matched up with this particular consultant pair and mirrored the level of difficulty of the cultural discourse necessary in such relationships, both on an interpersonal level, but also on a systems level.

In the initial silent selection process people seemed to engage in the process in different ways. Participants were more or less deliberate or skeptical or trusting. There were different levels of engagement as well. Some chose and some were the chosen ones. The actions initially were beyond participants’ conscious intentions or desires regardless of how they participated in the group selections. Something else was happening that drew the people together. As people sensed their way through this process and it ended up in the way it did, a bit of the Field made itself known.

These discoveries of groupings according to initially not-known similar state of lives were a revelation for participants and staff alike. It actually points to the existence of an organizing principle about human connections that is unfamiliar to most of us. This experience is just one example of being part of the More. In other words, there is more than we can see and understand going on all the time that we are initially aware of. Perhaps even more intriguing is that somehow these unseen and incomprehensible elements may well influence how we make choices, determine whom we gravitate to, and effect how we create collective experience.

Another example from such a group relations conference came when the staff was doing some work while the member groups were involved in another process. We were talking about our connections, and all of a sudden the song “Spanish Harlem” became part of the conversation. When we explored the lyrics and genre, it appeared that at that moment there was meaning in this song for every single staff member. The director was born in Harlem (the Netherlands), the associate director lived in Harlem, New York. Another person was of Hispanic descent and was deeply connected to the Spanish reference. For another the song evoked powerful images of her grandfather and a final person linked with the soul genre of the song. I remember it being an amazing experience that became even more powerful in the next moment. Shortly thereafter when we began our work with the participants about their process, I was quite stunned to find someone it the art group working on a clay red rose. The song begins with: There is a rose in Spanish Harlem / A red rose up in Spanish Harlem.

Invisible Strings

"One way of thinking about the Field is through the metaphor of the puzzle. Another way of describing it is that there are these invisible strings that we touch in each other without knowing it. If these strings would make sound, they would culminate in some harmonious string concert – even though on the surface this group of people appears to be quite diverse and perhaps even discordant. Yet another way of describing the Field is that there is some order in a seemingly disordered situation. One just needs the right circumstances to find the order. It is amazing how a chaotic neighborhood somehow becomes more orderly when viewed from some distance. Those of us who have experienced a plane taking off over a city gain a perspective where we can see its serenity, its intricate connection of the streets, its seeming unity, and its silent peacefulness. What one is likely to see then is a growing order and the neighborhood—the city—the region being part of a whole.

We all carry these invisible filled strings inside of us and we all have the capacity to touch these strings in other people. This process is invisible, but therefore not less real. A manifestation of how this capacity operates is the following. Why is it that when we walk on a busy street we discriminate between people – that is: we make choices? I’d love to have a conversation with certain people but not with others. I have decided this intuitively, because of impressions, image or sexual appeal, for example, the way people are dressed, or the way they walk and move. Or it could be that I have decided for a host of other reasons we don’t have words for yet – the proverbial ability to touch invisible strings. And all of us have the capacity to respond to the thrill of the string, as by magnetic force. It is almost as if we are weaving a web of like-minded or complimentary spirits.

When our mostly Dutch speaking family moved from the Netherlands to San Diego last year we did not know where to live. Through a series of “coincidences”, we ended up where we are. Two days after our belongings were delivered to the house we celebrated our oldest son’s birthday. He had made instant friends with the neighbors whom he all (eight of them) invited to a makeshift pizza party between the boxes. When time for the cake came, we sang a happy birthday. And because we just arrived from Holland and wanted to honor our language and tradition, we told the family we were going to sing the Dutch version of the song. To our amazement, the neighbors joined in singing the Dutch song. It turned out that they had lived in Holland for a number of years and one of their traditions was to sing Happy Birthday in Dutch at every celebration of their own birthdays.

The experience seems significant. What is the underlying principle in finding each other and living next to each other? At some point in time, we each chose to live there. Was it really that random and accidental, or was there more to it? When we see the Field, such an experience is evidence of the More.

Often we think we are individuals, separate human beings, little islands, but apparently we are connected to each other in ways that we don’t know or understand, perhaps like drops of water are connected to each other in the ocean. Or are we like stones and we never forget that we were part of a mountain? Are we part of something and trying to re-discover what that is? In the above ‘silent choosing’ example, people did seem drawn to each other like magnets, they chose each other unconsciously for reasons that were articulated shortly after this process but did not include the additional and profound discovered reason seven days later. In walking around and looking at each other and choosing each other, people “saw” what cannot be seen but is somehow “visible” nevertheless. It is like reading between the lines – except there were not even lines.

These experiences are experiences of “being part of the More.” Perhaps the best way to describe this More is that we as human beings are part of a subtle energy field that influences our human connections. In the moment of the discovery of why people had selected each other, the energy field of connections became “visible.”

For those of us who work with groups, it is relatively easy to understand: groups work on a particular content (for example a certain task or a project) and at the same time there is a group process going on (that comes out in glimpses of competition, attraction, protecting turf, etc.). In our human relationships, we make conscious and unconscious choices about people in our lives (about friends, where we work, who we love, etc.) and at the same time, we are part of a field in which the organizing principle of relationships is mostly unknown to us, yet very much operational.

The More as Flash Mob

The idea of a flash mob can help here. There is a flash mob, which takes place in a shopping mall; participants are cleaners, consumers, diners, business people and strollers in that mall. They are participants in the “world” of shopping. But suddenly specific music plays, one person starts singing and is gradually joined by more people. It is clear that in another “world” these different people are connected through music. By making the connection known (and in this case visible) a wonderful gift emerges.

In some ways, we are all part of a flash mob, in one "world", our connections with each other are relatively clear, in another “world”, our connections are to be discovered and revealed, the world of the energy field of connections. And if this connection emerges and is discovered – amazing gifts can emerge from that. Of course, the flash mob is in the realm of the known, the organizing principles of a flash mob are clear – at least to the organizers and participants in the mob. In the energy field of connections, we deal with the realm of the unknown and the organizing principles are much less clear.

What if we are more intentional about the discovery of this unknown? To try to make sense of our extra puzzle pieces, to discover underlying patterns, to speculate about what strings people touch in us and we in other people, to find a common radio frequency, to take a bit of distance from chaos, or simply to pay attention to seemingly disconnected situations and people. There is much more to be discovered about why we are related and connected, and if we do discover the reasons, the source, the organizing principles of it, it is my belief that it opens doors to unknown territories in evolution theory.

Practical and Concrete

Of course, this raises the question: how do we do this? How do we discover the energy field of connections? How do we know that it is happening in the moment? There are a couple of fundamentals, such as curiosity, interest and relative openness that need to be present in a person. Without at least some degree of these characteristics, not many discoveries will be made in this or any other field.

Awareness

"Discoveries can be made by becoming even more aware of what is going on inside and around oneself. I work at prominent European business schools in leadership programs with executives who make important strategic, financial and personnel decisions. During the program we introduce the concept of mindfulness, as an exercise we ask participants to close their eyes and to be quiet, and then we guide them through a body scan of about eight minutes. After the body scan is over, we invite them to write down what they noticed in their body and to give their reaction to the exercise.

Subsequently we engage in a debrief. One of the points we make is how much more people notice during these eight minutes than they normally do. They experience bodily sensations, like tensions, aches, temperature differences, heaviness, sounds, etc. because of slowing down, taking time and focused attention in this lightly guided exercise. We use it to make the point that we tend to hardly ever notice these things. Yet, once we stay with what these sensations might mean and explore them in subsequent guided exercises they actually contain a wealth of information. It is a bit like standing at the beach and looking at the ocean. I cannot see but water, yet there is a whole life hidden for which I need special equipment, time and energy to have access to that life and explore it.

For awareness to grow and develop, we need to expand our capacity to notice: not only noticing the obvious, but also the less obvious, the seemingly less important. In order to do that we may need to let go of some expectations and pre-determined patterns. I remember going to the zoo with my oldest son to have a fun day together. When we walked through the park, he was however much more fascinated with the pebbles and the stones he found on the path than with the animals, and he spent lots of time playing with them. At first, it was frustrating, but eventually I realized that discovering and playing with stones and pebbles was part of his world in which I was invited. And I started noticing stones with him.

I have come to think of noticing as tending to the soul of the world. Honoring what is around us. Nurturing. The practice of noticing is a pre-requisite of expanding awareness and it increases the chances of making connections, recognizing patterns and discovering more of the field. The invitation is to expand our capacity to notice, not to get lost in bodily sensations, to become marine biologists or to collect pebbles.

There are a number of things we can practice to enhance the quality of our noticing:

  • Being silent. When we stop talking, we listen better, we see more. We pay more attention to what usually easily escapes us or is edited out. In the silence, we become more aware of what goes on around us, and we will pay attention to our inner movements, our feelings, our thoughts and our memories.
  • Slowing down. When we allow ourselves to take time, we pay fuller attention. We can pay attention to the details. When we explore a city and walk through it, we get to know the city more intimately than when we drive through it.
  • Remaining curious. Many of us are paid to make good judgments and decisions. However, often judgment closes things down, simplified: yes to this, no to that. Curiosity opens things up for exploration. Why does this happen this way in this moment? What can we understand and learn from it? Are there other layers, connections? When we are in love, at some point in the process, we become incredibly curious about the person we are in love with and interpret their behaviors in all kinds of different ways. Can we apply the same curiosity to our chance encounters and see where they lead?
  • Paying attention to patterns. Discovering patterns in one’s own and other people’s behavior, between events, between people we meet – and paying attention to the more obvious and less obvious ones. What is our understanding of these patterns, how do we make sense of them?
  • Taking time. Provocatively, I wanted to call it “wasting time.” Taking time to not do anything often feels like wasting time. Yet, taking time frequently results in creative bursts of energy. It is often in the stillness and unexpected moments that insights arrive. We may feel that we are wasting time, and yet it is actually making room for emotions, thoughts, ideas and creative processes that are hidden underneath the busyness of our daily life.
  • Engaging in reflection. Our youngest son came to our bedroom one morning. He lay next to me and unexpectedly he said: “I really love this family.” It was very touching and a bit unusual. It is only later in a quiet moment of reflection during my airplane ride that I realized that it was exactly seven years ago that we welcomed this adopted child into our family.
  • Giving voice to what we notice. Sharing what we notice in words, images and metaphors, will make our experience more real. We learn to verbalize our discoveries and the sharing of this will help mark the field and perhaps slightly more recognizable for others.

Community

The seven practical and concrete factors above increase the quality of our noticing and the capacity of our noticing. It requires that we learn to hear with different ears and see with different eyes. It also requires that we are part of a community of some kind. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Recently, a trusted colleague and I finished guiding the first of three modules of an experience we named: Energy in Groups. A group of eight professionals took time to slow down, to take time, to reflect, to be silent, to stay curious and to pay attention to patterns. Throughout this process, people were invited to give voice to their discoveries, sometimes in the whole group sometimes in smaller subgroups. Together we saw things that would have been invisible if we would have been alone. It is as if together we could complete the words and music and dance to a song which none of us could have done individually. In this four-day experience, the field became more visible for us as a group. Since then, people have reported that their experience of the field is quite present, but more in the background until a conversation, or an email exchange with another person from the program and then the discoveries, insights, patterns and connections reveal themselves like new flowers of inpatients.

This field theory, if you will, has individual aspects and social aspects and because it is relatively new, it is very helpful to explore with others what can be discovered. Like minded people provide the emotional setting in which individuals can do their own internal work. The field asks us to not only examine the connections between us, but also beyond us and inside of us. This happens with the support of other people, in communities of all kinds.

Sharing experiences make the field also more visible and accessible. In addition, it helps to create certain common markers in this field, as a point of orientation, like a buoy in the sea, a stone in a field or a star in the sky.

Writing, as a technology, has completely transformed and changed man's cconsciousness, as we learn from On, who infoms us thusly:

"Of course all expression and all thought is to a degree formulaic in the sene that every word and every concept conveyed in a word is kind of formula, a fixed way of processing the data of experience and reflection intellectually organized, and acting as a mnemonic device of sorts. Putting experience into any words (which means transforming in at least a little bit - not the same as falsifying it) can implement its recall. The formulas characterizing orality are more elaborate, however, than are individual words, though some may be relatively simple: the "Beowulf"-poets 'whale-road' is a formula (metaphorically) for the sea in a sense in which the term 'sea' is not."

Ong further delves much deeper into the Orality of language and experience by stating the following:

"Awareness of the mnemonic base of the thought and expression in primary oral cultures opens the way to understanding some further characteristics of orally based thought and expression in addition to their formulaic styling. The characteristics treated here are some of those which set off orally based thought and expression from chirograpically and typographically based thought and expression, the characteristic, that is, which are most likely to strike those reared in writing and print cultures as surprising.

"This inventory of characteristics is not presented as exclusive or conclusive, but as suggestive for more work and reflction needed to deepen understanding of orally based thought (and thereby understanding of choreographically based, typographically based, and electronically based thought)."

As we select a much more deper learning of understanding about orall tradtions, we come to the point wherein Ong Discusses, :

Oral Memorization

"Verbal memory skill is understandably a valued asset in oral cultures. But the way verbal memory works inn oral art forms is quite different from what literates in the past commonly imagined. In a lterate culture, verbatim memorization is commonly done from a text, to which the memorizer returns as often as necessary to perfect and test verbatim mastery.

In the past, literates have commonly assignee that oral memoryization in an oral culture, normally achieved the same goal of absolutely verbatim repetition. How such repetition could be verified before sound recordings wwere nown was unclear, since in the absence of writing the only to test for berbatim repetition of lengthy passages would be the simultaneous recitation of the passages by two or more persons together.

Sucessive recitations could not be checked against each other. But instances of simultaneous recitation in oral cultures were hardly sought for. Literates were happy simply to assume that the prodigious oral memory functioned somewhat according to their own verbatim textual mode. For example:

"Verbatim reproduction of oral materials were not fostered by a ritual setting but by a special linguistic or musical constraints. One is from Somali classical poetry, which has a scansion pattern weemingly more complex and rigid than that of ancient Greek epic, so that the language cannot be varied so readiily. the somali oral poets 'learn the rules of prosody in a manner similar, if not identical to they way they learn grammar itself.

"They can no more state what the metrical rules are than they can state the rules of Somali Grammar. The Somali poets do not normally compose and perform at the same time, but work out a composition in prvate, word-for-word, which they afterwards recite in public themselves or pass on to anaother to recite. This again is clear instance of oral verbatim memorization"

I am only giving a brief intro to a very deep and involved subject. But, for the purposes of this Hub, I draw a line between literates(book cultured) and oral memorizers, to show how writing alters and structures our consciousness in realation to what we see today as Technology which uses the word and writing, memorization(in part) to give meaning to our world and existence-and enable us to interact and communicate as dictated to by the present virally spiralling technological Technopoly.

I am also attempting to buttress the notion that writing structures our consciousmness. I o this by tracing the history and roots/trole of oral memorization and how it kept social experience within the words, and writing takes it from the minds eye ad consciousness, and commits it to paer, thaus altering and changing the mid ability to real, verbatim, what needs to be relayed and conveyed, effectively and authentically. Chaning from oral memorization to writing, changed the way man used used and aareness to accommodate the loss of memorization through oral verbosity and retention. This is very important in helping us begin to see how writing structures, how and why.

Wrting has now been upgraded to viral splurging, and this too had altered and adjusted our consciousness. Inatancy and repletion, fast folw and new paradigms are what is dictaing our state of consciousness. Writing still is prsent, tbut it is streaming data, and this has made our minds to adapt and be in tune with the new way of gathering , memorizing, retaining and reciting fast moving writing/data as dictated by the speed of the Internet. This is another matter which will be delved into much deep later on as this Hub devolps and evolves.

Writing Definitely Structures Consciousness as Postulated By Walter Ong

The Following article was written by Brenda Dyck Interpreting Ong's Theory on the fact that Writing Trandorms Consciousness

Writing Restructures Consciousness, the fourth chapter of Walter J. Ong's Orality and Literacy: The Technologizing of the Word, addresses how the technology of writing, more than any other technology, has transformed the human consciousnes (2002, p.77).

At the onset of the chapter, Ong suggests that writing introduces a manner of discussion between the writer and the reader, one that cannot be questioned or disputed via oral speech because written discourse is detached from its author (2002, p.77). Bolter further elaborates on this detachment by commenting on our inclination to magnify the distance between the author and the reader, as the author becomes a monumental figure, and the reader [being] only a visitor in the author's cathedral (2001, p.4).

Interactive writing spaces such as web logs and wikis suggests that an evolution of the author/reader relationship is at work in our world with feedback being sought from the reader. The finality of the text is becoming less obvious as the reader takes on the role of the writer and the writer takes on the role of the reader for a time. This bounce and catch of thought lessens the detachment between the author and the reader that Ong refers to. Blood seems to agree with this as she points out the power of weblogs to transform both writers and readers from audience to public and from consumer to creator "(2000).

Ong refers to Platos well-known objections to writing- its tendency to destroy the memory, weaken the mind, to promote passivity and its inability to defend itself as effectively as the spoken word can (2002). Many of these warnings run parallel to current day technologies that evoke similar societal concerns as those expressed by Plato many centuries ago. Questions that current day, technology-cautious individuals are asking now center on the use of calculators in math or the ever-growing use of the word processor in composition classes.

Lott speaks of those who cannot see value in using a new method or technology attempt to derail the practice and force teachers to use previous teaching methods and Leibowitz cites university professor concerns that while students writing done on a word professor is longer than in the past, it lacks manual revision and fine-tuning, instead relying on spell check to correct spelling and grammar.

Also lacking, according to Leibowitz, is the texture and depth of thought expected in post-graduate level writing. Lacking in these concerns, as in Plato's time, is the suggestion that the use of new technology does not need to obliterate previous technologies, that new technologies can enhance and expand previous technologies.

Writing, according to Ong, heightens consciousness by advancing beyond being mere exterior tools of communication, to an interior conduit to thought processes associated with the reading of the text. Ong goes as far to propose that the use of technologies such as writing can enrich the human psyche, enlarge the human psyche, enlarge the human spirit intensify its interior life (2002, p.82).

After a thorough explanation regarding the evolution of writing in society, Ong concludes that writing is not a simple appendage of speech since it moves speech from the oral domain to a new sensory world, that of vision and that it transforms speech and thought as well (2002, p.84).

The place that technology has in inhibiting or enhancing this heightened consciousness is debatable. Leibowitz points to questions concerning whether the absence of pen and paper interferes with the intellectual processes associated with writing by hand or whether feeling the word as your hand writes it out is needed to truly release thought into text and tells of one university professor who wondered if it is possible that slow, manual process, touches the soul more than those done on word processors.

Ong documents the evolution of the use of written records as opposed to using formerly revered oral methods to provide evidence of fact and truth. Here the reader reads about the lingering presence of orality within the use of written forms since, according to Clanchy, documents didn't immediately inspire trust (1979, p.230).

This is in sharp contrast to today's practices that give credibility to the written word, as long as credible written sources are provided in the way of a bibliography. Nay Sayers of the World Wide Web often comment on the online writings of people who sound like experts in their writing but in actuality lack the credible qualifications they claim to have.

The use of dynamics in text is addressed in this chapter, with Ong describing the role that the writer plays in creating the audience to which they write. Ong suggests that the manner in which readers are fictionalized is the underside of literary history, of which the topside is the history of genres and the handling of character and plot (2002, p.10.

It can also be said that the writers can fictionalize themselves, something that can be observed in online writing where contributors to bulletin boards and listservs create online personae for themselves, ones that may or may not be accurate in real life.

Later, Ong explores how words are required to do more than break down the dense continuum of experience by crafting words to fill in the gaps produced by an absence of facial expressions, intonation and a face to face hearer (2002). Words, it appears, are no longer sufficient to fill in these gaps. Email communication, instant messaging and listservs are witnessing an upsurge of what some consider to be the evolution of a new language, a curious form of text that employs the use of visual symbols and shorthand that attempts to fill in the absence of facial expressions, intonation and the need to be brief and speedy communicators. Lee describes how some teachers are encouraging students to use this messaging shorthand as a way of jumpstarting the writing process, then later requiring students to switch back to standard English when they begin editing and revising their work.

Org ends the chapter by discussing the place that Learned Latin had in the interaction of writing and orality and explains how this 'school language', well situated in male dominated academia, was a language written and spoken almost solely by males. Here, Ong points out the potential that writing has to separate and distance the knower and the known, something Learned Latin effectively accomplished.

Ong credits Learned Latin for nurturing the growth of modern science due to the common language it offered for philosophers and scientists of all ages and nationalities. Bolter suggests that this achievement is also a limitation as it isolated groups who did not have access to this language, notably, women and lesser-educated males (2001).

It is interesting to consider how the establishment of hypertext does what Learned Latin failed to do which is to fracture[ing] the single voice of the printed text and speaking [ing] in different registers to different readers
and by tailor[ing] itself to each reader's needs (2001, Bolter, p.11). Where Learned Latin created exclusive access to text and understanding, hypertext seeks to be inclusive, adhering to the Declaration of Helsinki that promotes the ideal that an information society "should be for the benefit of all citizens, communities, and peoples of the world, regardless of race, social position, creed, gender or age".

The age of conscious-technology is coming as two mega technology trends converge: our built environments become so intelligent that they seem conscious, and humans become so integrated with technology that we become cyborgs. Like every other revolution in human history, from agriculture to industry to the internet, the arrival of conscious-technology will have both good and bad effects. Can we think deeply and wisely about the future we want while we still have time to shape the effects of conscious-technology?

Humans will become cyborgs as our biology becomes integrated with technology. We are already microminiaturizing technology and putting it in and on our bodies. In the coming decades, we will augment our physiological and cognitive capacities as we now install new hardware and software on computers. This will offer access to genius-level capabilities and will connect our brains directly to information and artificial intelligence networks.

Our built environment will incorporate more artificial intelligence. With the Internet of Things, we are integrating chips and sensors into objects, giving them the impression of consciousness – as when we use voice commands to control heating, lighting or music in our homes. As our increasingly intelligent environments connect with our cyborg future, we will experience a continuum of our consciousness and our technology. As humans and machines become linked more closely, the distinction between the two entities will blur.

Conscious-technology will force us to confront fundamental questions about life. All ages and cultures have had mystics who have been interested in consciousness and the meaning of life, as well as technocrats who have been interested in developing technology to improve the future. All cultures have a mix of the two, but the representatives of each viewpoint tend to be isolated from and prejudiced towards each other. To improve the quality of the Conscious-Technology Age, the attitudes of mystics and approaches of technocrats should merge.

At some point, it is likely that development will start to happen very quickly: when artificial intelligence is able to rewrite its own code, based on feedback from global sensor networks, it will be able to get more intelligent from moment to moment. We already have structures, albeit imperfect, to monitor and prevent the mass destructive capacity of nation states and groups – what structures could prevent the threat of SIMADs?

Connecting human brains directly to information and artificial intelligence networks raises the question of whether minds could be hacked and manipulated. How can we minimize the potential for information or perceptual warfare and its potential consequence of widespread paranoia?

Accelerated automation will render much of today’s work unnecessary. Driverless vehicles could remove the need for taxi, bus and truck drivers. Personal care robots could take over many functions of nurses and care workers. Artificial intelligence could make humans redundant in professions such as law and research. Will conscious-technology create more jobs than it replaces? Or is massive structural unemployment inevitable, requiring the development of new concepts of economics and work?

If we think ahead and plan well, the conscious-technology civilization could become better than we can currently imagine. Governance could be vastly improved by collective intelligence systems; it could become easier to prevent and detect crime; needs and resources could be matched more efficiently; opportunities for self-actualization could abound; and so on. However, it would be wise to think through the possibilities of the Conscious-Technology Age today and shape its evolution to create the future civilization we desire.

I would also like to, at this juncture, to add another even more broader perspective/dimension on the role technology plays in raising our consciousness but differing to N.Z. Aliyeva et al, in the following lengthy post:

Loss Of Orality And sound Means Commiting Word Onto Some Space-Thus Technologizing It, And Structuring Our Consciousness.

Plato's Socrates urges, writing destroys memory. Those who use writing will become forgetful, relying on an externalsource for what they lack in internal resources. Writing weakens the mind.


Today, some parents and others fear that pocket calculators pro- vide an external resource for what ought to be the internal resource of memorized multiplication tables. Presumably, constant repetition of multiplication tables might produce more and more Albert Einsteins. Calculators weaken the mind, relieve it of the setting-up exercises that keep it strong and make it grow. (Significantly, the fact that the computer manages multiplication and other computation so much more effectively than human beings do, shows how little the multiplication tables have to do with real thinking.)

"In keeping with the agonistic mentality of oral cultures, their tendency to view everything in terms of interpersonal struggle, Plato's Socrates also holds it against writing that the written word cannot defend itself as the natural spoken word can: real speech and thought always exist essentially in the context of struggle. Writing is passive, out of it, in an unreal, unnatural world. So, it seems, are computers: if you punch the keys they will not fight back on their own, but only in the way they have been programmed to do."

The programmed techniques of the machines and their inbuilt technologies in turn program us and do what we waht them to do, thus programming us in the process, and structuring our consciousness. As plato says, we forfeit our cogintive abilities and are apt to forgefullness in the case of modern day techologies and their techniques. The part of society hith high technosization in our everyday lves, is strictly speaking, determined and conditioned by technology: we bocme technisized and are made to be dependent by techology and its techniques for it usurps and handcuff. our ntural abilities to commit all things to memory, and we defer those ways and means of thinking to the machines and their technologies that in the end, the very technologies transform us into allowing these machines to do for us what we have been doing ourselves.

At the risk of sounding redundant, it is important that I keep on reiterating our surrending to technique and meaning that we will end up, as we seem to have done, today, we are enslaved by our technologies. Writing, when it was first introduced, was its intrusion into the realm of orality, that many knew that we were giving up something in order to transition to reading and writinng instead of reciting orally what we knew and could summon from memory. Ong says:

"One weakness in Plato's position is that he put these misgivings about writing into writing, just as one weakness in antiprint posi- tions is that their proponents put their objections into print, and one weakness in anti-computer positions is that they are articulated in articles or books printed from tapes composed on computer terminals. The law at work here is: once the word is techno- logized, there is no really effective way to criticize its condition without the aid of the technology you are criticizing. The complaints about these three inventions are all the same because writing and print and the computer are all ways of technologizing the word. "



"Although we take writing so much for granted as to forget that it is a technology, writing is in a way the most drastic of the three technologies of the word:It initiated what printing and electronics only continued, the physical reduction of dynamic sound to quiescent space, the separation of the word from the living present, where alone real, spoken words exist."

If we recognize these effects and affects of the written words as utilized in the new technological mediums and written through them, we are therefore subjects of of and conditioned if not already, in doing so, structured dnd made consdcious by our writing using present-day technologies and tier techniques. From sound to space commitment, the word has alredy been technologized, even theough we are going to write about it as affecting us, the fact that orality was lost, in of itself means that the teword has been committed to some space, that this makes it technologized and our consciousness therefore, beocmes structured thereof. This is the nub of the issue and the crux of the Hub above.
