The iPhone Spy Cams App - Spying With The iPhone

Updated on January 19, 2011

The Spy Cams app or Spy Cameras app for the iPhone is a simple little app that gives the user access to hundreds of online video cameras. This is not an iPhone app for spying on people, it’s just something that is a bit of fun and gives you the chance to view some interesting sights.  Although many people may be looking for a way to use the iPhone for spying this app will really not help in this regard and this article in no way encourages people to use the iPhone to spy on people.

The Spy Cams app is simply designed to give people the opportunity to view a few interesting sights and places from around the world.   The name spy cams is probably slightly misleading as there really is no actual spying involved in using this app.

How The App Looks

Spy On What

Spy Cams for the iPhone is a free app to download so you really don’t have anything to lose by downloading this app. Although there are no real practical uses I can see for the spy cameras app it can be interesting to use every once in a while. When the app starts you are taken to the main homepage, here you are given a selection of tiles to view. Each tile is a small thumbnail view of a camera. The cameras range in location and subject, I would say the vast majority of them are CCTV cameras that are located on street corners, bridges and the side of buildings.

Some of the cameras are actually in buildings themselves, you can often watch people going about their daily lives. Some are most unusual, I have seen one camera that is on the inside of a rabbit hutch! To browse through the different cameras you can select which category you would like. There is a regularly updated list of the top cams, the most viewed cams and also the newest cams that have been added to the app. You also have the ability to search the cams if there is one in particular you are looking for.

Using The App

When you have chosen a camera that you wish to view on the spy cams app you simply click the little tile. This takes you to a larger view of the cam and the camera will start to refresh for you. However, often you find that a lot of the cameras on the app don’t actually work, so sometimes you have to try a few before you find a live one. When you have found a cam that you like you can post a comment below saying what you think of the cam. You can also view other users comments although these don’t seem to be monitored in any way so you do get some adult content on there sometimes, so be aware of this.

The company who produce the spy cams app for the iPhone make their money by posting adverts on the app. So every so often you will get an advert popping up and interrupting your viewing a little, but this is no major problem as they are not normally to invasive.

I think some people may download the spy cams app thinking it is some devious way of using the iPhone to spy on people using hidden cams. Or thinking that maybe some of the cams will have adult themes, they do not. This is an app that is suitable for anyone and it is in no way designed to be invasive or be used to actually spy on people. I think the name spy cams is a little misleading in that regard.

Overall this app really does not have that many handy uses. But if you are the kind of person who enjoys seeing different places and different things then you might like to download the spy cams app. It can be good fun to browse through some of the cameras and see what is going on around the world, it can also be interesting to try to work out where some of the cameras are. So if you want to try something a little different on the iPhone then maybe spy cams is for you.
