Things you can do with Amazon's Kindle Fire HD in Nigeria

Using Kindle Fire HD

Although the Kindle Fire HD does come with a couple of freebies your probably can't access to in Nigeria such as Amazon prime, Amazon's almost unlimited library of books and so on, there are still a whole lot of other things you can do with the Kindle Fire HD in Nigeria.

What you can do with Kindle Fire HD in Nigeria

  • Browse the web: Amazon Kindle Fire HD comes with a custom built browser called the silk browser however it works a bit like the Google chrome browser and can adapt web pages for both mobile and desktop sites. It however browses faster when you opt for the mobile version. You can do searches on Google, browse and shop on the amazon market place, check your email and get entertained with streaming media from YouTube.
  • Connect to a Wireless network: It doesn't work with gprs or 3g but you can connect to w wireless internet connection for browsing. Personally this worked well for me when using MTN Hynet cpe modem.
  • Copy books and other media: You can copy your digital books, video and music to your Kindle Fire from your computer using the usd cable. After copying them to the local drive on internal storage, you can always watch them later. The kindle comes with about 16gb of free space. Isn't that something?
  • Read books, watch copied movies and listen to music: You can always access your stored files in the Kindle by going to the device's local folder for your files. Files supported include mp3, mp4, .mobi, e.t.c.
  • Output HD to TV: You can also output your Kindle display to your tv or other electonic gadget that accepts hdmi using a hdmi cord.
  • Install and Play games: You can always install games for playing them later on the Kindle Fire. The amount of apps you are able to install will depend on the space available in your internal storage. Since Nigeria is not the US, you can always install apps for Kindle by going to apps.opera.com. You can install games like Angry birds and soccer.
  • Store and view photos: You can upload a whole lot of your digital pictures to your kindle and view them anytime. You can view the pictures using your photo gallery.
  • Recharge the battery with a USB cable: This you can do by connecting one end to an output USB port on your laptop or other device and the other to the microUSB port on the Kindle.
  • Take pictures and video: All you need to do this is get a Kindle Fire camera app and install it on your device. This activates the front facing camera and you can take pictures or videos of yourself with audio input.
  • Download apps from Android sites and Amazon store: This is a recent update and I did this by making some changes and using my Amazon gift card.

Well, personally, what I prefer doing with the Kindle Fire HD is browsing and listening to music. The audio output is great and you can even connect it to an external speaker for more effects. Besides it's more portable to browse with the Kindle while lying down than using a laptop and I've seen that it is even mor durable than most laptops assuming it falls to the ground. I would advise you also get the back cover when purchasing your Kindle Fire rather than buying the device alone. The back cover would help make it longer lasting to shock.

Update: You can also access Amazon's appstore from Nigeria. Learn how I do this from here

hello Felix,

you won't believe how happy i am to read from someone who actually uses a kindle in Nigeria. i have been using mine for 5 months and for now it has been really been satisfying my cravings for books but i would like to do more with it as i know i have not even tapped into .01 of its capacity. major issue is you cannot download or install any movie, music or apps from the amazon store due to location. what other way is there (one you are currently using)? i would like to be able to buy books from barnes and noble, download certain apps i need from google and other stores since downloading from amazon is a no-go area.

thanks.

Actually, Duchess, I just discovered that I could also download apps straight from the Amazon appstore. I have recently written an article on how I do that. Apart from the appstore, you can also get Kindle apps from Android support sites like apps.opera.com. All I needed to get Kindle apps from amazon were an Amazon gift card, a VCC, a US address and a change in my kindle settings.

Here is how I download apps from Amazon while in Nigeria: http://hubpages.com/technology/How-to-download-app...

duchess 3 years ago

Wats a VCC if you dont mind me asking...does it matter the type of gift card you get and when you mean a US address can my friend's own(that was where i had the kindle delivered to) count as one and for the change in kindle settings i had always used US

duchess 3 years ago

iv found what a VCC is but how do i get one? were you able to buy movies as well?

Yes, I was able to get movies. I actually used an expired VCC which I got in the past but just changed the expiry date. You can get one from any Nigerian provider like gtn-ng.com or graphcard.com. The VCC is not really important as you can use any random credit card number that is tied to a US address even if it is expired. The bottom line is that Amazon will only bill your gift card when your credit card doesn't sail through. So, in essence you will just be paying from the balance in your gift card as the VCC or US credit card is just or the records. But you will need to buy a gift card with a real credit card issued from Nigeria with your account.

hello felix,

quick one: whats the purpose of the purchasing and funding a gift card when you can make purchases with your VCC?

HELPPP!!!!!

You can use either. Well, I guess you should just get a VCC with funds in it and it would work. You can get one with as low as $20. Remember, you should then use the card details and a US address in changing your 1-click settings for Kindle. You can do this by going to amazon.com/manageyourkindle

duchess 3 years ago

one last question: does the VCC need to have a US address or Nigeria is fine?

VCCs don't come tied to an address as you can use it for any country. Anyway, a US address would be preferrable

hello felix,

i have been struggling wiht this whole VCC/graphcard wahala. graphcard will want me to fund my VCC account either through VTN or paypal and under paypal nigeria is not among the verified countries...now i do not want to fund the vcc as i have a gift card with enough money in it to buy my movies and songs...how do i go about it? ironically, i was able to download games from amazon by removing my credit card details but i cant do much else as it keeps on telling me "cannot process order due to geographical location''

What is your gift card balance currently? If you still have some funds in your gift card and you are using a credit card with a US billing address, it should work even if it a randomly generated credit card number. Amazon just needs to keep a US credit card on record.

Also, remember to change your country settings to USA by going to amazon.com/manageyourkindle > Country settings

duchess 3 years ago

my country settings have been changed to US. randomly generated number? how do you get a randomly generated number with a verified us address? i did that (a randomly genereated credit card number, my name and the same US shipping address i had the kindle delivered to)and it still says same..I Give up!!! i just cant seem to get this right...:(

I don;t know what else to tell you but here is a checklist:

Go to amazon.com/manageyourkindle

Under country settings = USA

Under Kindle payment settings = Use a US credit card and address e.g 4313 8025 6901 1548, expiry 03/14

Add a gift card with $20

I hope it works for you cause it works for me

Note: Your 1-click settings should be a US address too.

duchess 3 years ago

do you have an e-mail so i can send to you the screen shots and then you can see cos it isnt working for me...thanks for your patience and help..i appreciate it.

Sorry I can't post my email on this page. But in which country are you actually using your Kindle in?

duchess 3 years ago

nigeria...

I'm not sure why it still doesn't work for you but it works for me that I've downloaded a lot of apps already. Keep trying and follow the suggestions I've already offered you.

duchess 3 years ago

i have been able to download and purchase apps but not music and movies....but i guess im probably not doing something though God knows i have done everything...kindle country settings says United States with the 1-click address, a us credit card (randomly generated mastercard), us address (randomly generated) as well. 1-click setting is on and a 29.00 gift card (it was originally $50)...so i honestly dont have an idea on what may be wrong.

thanks.

Ok so you can download apps? Well, I'm not yet downloading movies or music from it yet do I don't know how that works for now. I think I'll try it out later on.

duchess 3 years ago

Update: I can now download movies an mp3s from Amazon but it was not an easy task. I had to get a US visa gift card and a US ip address. I was able to buy an mp3 and a TV episode. It worked easily. Once you've purchased the content, you can then download it to your Kindle anytime you want.

Hello Felix,

I am interested in buying the new Kindle Fire HDX but I read its specifications as it only uses 4G LTE and WIFI. Will this product be worth purchasing? I really love this but are there any alternatives.

felix09 profile image

felix09 3 years ago from Nigeria Author

The Kindle comes with a lot of options. What other specifications would you want o your Kindle? I think it would be worth purchasing.

teetee 3 years ago

sorry, I mean t to be more specific. I was told that the Kindle Fire HDX will not work in Nigeria because it is 4G LTE and it can only work with a 3G WiFi. I thought, according to my reading that it had all the connectivity. I just want to know and make sure that it can work in Nigeria. If it means me purchasing a mobile WiFi then all the better...but can it work with a 3G WiFi?

Hi teetee, if you are considering buying a Kinde Fire HDX, then I'd advise buying the one without 4G LTE. The ones that come with 4G LTE seem to be locked to networks like AT&T and Verizon. Buy the one that comes with WiFi and save yourself about $100 and the stress of having to unlock it to use local networks like MTN, Glo or Airtel. Personally, I only buy kindles that are WiFi only. I don't know about unlocking 4G LTE Kindle Fire linked networks.
