Top 5 Reasons You Should Find Me on Facebook

The Friend of the Information Age

Facebook has changed everything hasn't it. It has even changed the definition of the word "friend". So much so that facebook itself has tried to define these new cyber "friendships" by adding an acquaintances category. No matter how many high tech gadgets, widgets and gizmos you add, friendship is and always will be what you make of it. "Friendship is what each individual person defines it to be. Funny how such an inclusive word can be so divisive at times. For me everyone is a friend. Then I have close personal relationships that I value beyond that. Sounds complicated but friendship is complicated isn't it. Or at least it should be.

That said I have over 1,000 friends on facebook and I have friended people based on a personal interest expressed in their profile or mutual friendship on facebook. No matter what your definition of friend, you should freind me on facebook. Here are five reasons why.

Reason #1 - I Am A Nice Guy!!

I am a father of two boys. My wife and I have been married for over five years. I am your typical Midwestern middle class dude with typical Midwestern middle class dude interests. In addition, I also am a student of media, politics, sports fan and baseball junkie. However my biggest passion i smaking the healthcare industry a better place. This means you will get status updates which include random thoughts about these items and the occasional link. Don't get me wrong the majority of my time goes to work and spending time with my family. But thanks to the technical wonder of the cell phone I'll update my status every other day or so.

Reason #2 - Spam Free

I hate spam. I am not referencing the email type for now, but the canned ham version. Once at the National Boy Scout Jamboree we were given a sack lunch and in that sack lunch was.....spam. There was a gelatinous goo on the top and it was disgusting. Every kid there refused to eat it and whatsmore, we made fun of the kids who did.

Now that I have ruined my sponsorship opportunity with Spam, let me address the email type. Everyone hates email spam and I don't do it. Like I stated in my hub "Top 5 Reasons You Should Follow Me On Twitter", I will not put a status post about how you could win a gift card.

My goal is to build a network of people with similar interests who are likely to support each others personal and business interests. Spamming only violates that trust and yes I believe trust exists even in a cyber-friendship.

Reason #3 - Build a Network

As mentioned above I think facebook is a perfect way to build an information network of people who have simular interests and are likely to support each other in those interests. If you friend me and we connect then we can exchange information, links and make each other aware of events that might interest our group.

Reason #4 - I Read Your Status Posts

Yes I actually read those status posts. I am in sales and sometimes I am required to wait to see someone. I found that while waiting some folks read the newspaper or a book. I read and respond to your status posts. Makes the day go by faster and keeps my mind going for the upcoming sales call. What that means for you is you know someone is reading.

Disclaimer: I will not read your status updates about zombie farm or pot farm or any other kind of farm. I don't care if you need fertilizer or seed and you certainly won't get it from me. I don't have an opinion about it I just don't read it and it junks up my stream. I block most apps so I can only see you the status posts you put in.

Reason #5 - Everyone Needs More Friends

Whether you are a close friend or a cyber friend, I value that. As the Internet grows, different cultures and people are starting to find common ground. I have learned more about the other side of issues and have better understood opposing viewpoints because of interactions Ion facebook.

Most people want the same thing out of life. A peaceful, friendly decent world where people from all walks of life can hear and be heard. If we all stick together and be friendly to each other we can make the Internet a better place and maybe we can start to make the world a better place too.

I did not know that you can be suspended for adding "too many" friends on Facebook?!? I know people on Facebook that have 1,000s of friends. I assume it is a matter of how fast one adds friends, as they might not want people to just spam others for friends. But really what business is it of Facebook if you have 1,000s of friends or want to friend 1,000s of people in a hurry? Not sure their logic there?!?

Anyway, I am kind of divided about Facebook myself. I do not accept friend requests from people I do not know, because I want to actually keep it actual friends of mine and also I am concerned about privacy. One strange thing is that I am Facebook friends with about a half dozen former girlfriends. That gives me mixed feelings, but I'm glad they still want to be friends with me.

It's a matter of how fast you add them before you get suspended or flagged. Facebook is getting ridiculous. I switched to Google+.
