Turn Your iPod Touch into a Phone for Free

You might ask how an iPod touch can be used as a phone. It doesn’t have cell phone service and Apple wouldn’t have a cheaper contract free iPhone available. Well the reason this is possible is because the iPod touch and iPhone are identical besides two key features; no camera, and no cell phone service or support. You may not be able to install a camera in your iPod Touch, but you can certainly make phone calls and send text messages. By using the iPod Touch’s Wi-Fi support you can make phone calls and text messages to anyone and everyone. The iPod Touch can use Wi-Fi networks like a cell phone network; however, Wi-Fi availability is limited thus limiting the practicality of using an iPod Touch as a phone. If you really want to use an iPod touch solely as a phone and have network coverage everywhere there is a way to do that which we will cover later.

Choosing How to Turn Your iPod into a Phone

There are two ways to make your iPod into a phone for free; one involves downloading some free apps from the app store, and the other involves jail breaking your iPod and downloading an app.

If you choose to make your iPod into a phone using only apps in the app store, you should know that the interface will not be streamlined like the iPhone and you will have to use two different apps to make calls and send text messages. Since were turning into a phone for free, there will also be ads displayed in the apps. Despite these setbacks using this method is completely legal and supported by Apple and will still do everything your iPhone will do.

If you choose to make your iPod into a phone via jail breaking, you should know jail breaking is legal, but not encouraged by Apple. Jail breaking makes your iPod more vulnerable to viruses and bugs. If you jailbreak your iPod just be careful of what you download. Once you jailbreak your iPod you can sign up for Google Voice and download the GV app. The GV app is much more streamlined than the free apps available and gives the user an experience more similar to the iPhone.

App Store Way Summary

  • Get a pair of headphones with a mic, preferably Apple headphones with mic (comes standard with 32gb and 64gb iPod Touch).
  • Download iCall free VoIP for free phone calls.
  • Download Textfree Unlimited for free texting.

App Store Way

In the App store there are many apps that can turn you iPod into a phone. Services that provide voice calling are known as VoIP. The most popular VoIP is Skype, however, the Skype app is free it will cost you money to make calls to other cell phones; it is only free Skype to Skype calling. There are many apps to choose from so if one doesn’t work for you or you don’t like a certain VoIP you can try another. My favorite VoIP is iCall free VoIP. iCall is free and can be downloaded in the app store. Once you download the app you can set up your account and start calling. It even imports you contact book into the program, so you can call from you address book.

In order to send text messages you need to download a separate app. There are many text messaging apps, but by far the best is Textfree Unlimited.  Just download and set up an account and start sending text messages for free. It is that easy.

Jail Breaking Way Summary

  • Get a pair of headphones with a mic, preferably Apple headphones with mic (comes standard with 32gb and 64gb iPod Touch).
  • Jailbreak your iPod.
  • Download Google Voice app.

Jail Breaking Way

You will need to jailbreak your iPod, you can Google how to do it or if you already have jail broken you iPod read on. Go to the Cydia store and download the Google Voice App. Set up an account and you can now call and text anyone for free. The reason this app is not available in the app store is because Apple felt GV would add to much functionality to the iPod Touch, so Apple rejected it. Google did not want their project to go to waste so they released it in the Cydia app store.

iPod Touch Phone with Network Support.

The key difference between the iPod and iPhone is the support of a cell phone network. We have seen that it is very possible and easy to give your iPod iPhone functionality. However it is impractical to solely use your iPod Touch as a phone due to limited Wi-Fi availability.

You can however get cell phone coverage support on your iPod very easily and thus use your iPod as an iPhone for much cheaper. Most cell phone providers sell little 3g hotspot cards that convert the phones network into Wi-Fi for your computer and now your iPod. Sprint sells a very slim card that creates Wi-Fi coverage. Sprints Overdrive™ 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot by Sierra Wireless can be found on Sprint's website and is .61” thick, about the size of a cell phone. If you were so inclined you could purchase a data plan from sprint and purchase the 3g hotspot device and carry it around with your iPod. Thus providing you with cell phone service on you iPod Touch phone wherever you go.

Textfree is bait and switch. I accumulated many free minutes jumping through their hoops until one day they claim I missed a hoop, even though their logs say I jumped through their hoop in time. Lost my number and all the accumulated minutes.
