What activities are allowed and disallowed for permission levels in Sharepoint 2013?

Sharepoint 2013 restricts the activities users can perform by requiring each user to be assigned specific permissions (the authority to perform certain activities within Sharepoint) which are grouped into permission levels. Sharepoint 2013 has seven default permission levels: View Only, Limited Access, Read, Contribute, Edit, Design, and Full Control. All permission levels (if not modified) can open a website, list or folder, view forms, views, and application pages, view information about users of the website, and use features which launch client applications.

View Only

This permission level allows users to view application pages, items, documents and versions. Users are able to create, alter, and browse user information. This permission level cannot manage permission (including assigned permission to users and groups), create subsites, create groups, and manage alerts. Users at this level cannot create, manage, and delete lists, add or remove columns in a list, or add or remove public views of a list. Users at this level cannot add items to lists and documents to document libraries, edit items in lists and documents in document libraries, delete items from a list and documents from a document library, delete past versions of a list item or document, create, change, and delete personal views of lists.

Limited Access

This permission level allows users to access shared resources and specific lists, document libraries, folders, list items, or documents without enabling the user to access the entire site. Limited Access permission levels cannot be assigned to a group, instead a specific permission is assigned to a single item and then Sharepoint automatically assigns Limited Access to the other required locations. This permission level cannot manage permissions (including assigned permissions to users and groups), create subsites, create groups, and manage alerts.

Read

This permission level allows users to view pages, list items, and download documents. By default, this level is assigned to the Visitors group. This permission level cannot manage permissions (including assigned permissions to users and groups), create subsites, create groups, and manage alerts. Users at this level also cannot create, manage, and delete lists, add or remove columns in a list, or add or remove public views of a list. Users at this level cannot add items to lists and documents to document libraries, edit items in lists and documents in document libraries, delete items from a list and documents from a document library, delete past versions of a list item or document, create, change, and delete personal views of lists, add or remove personal Web Parts on a Web Part Page.

Users at this level also cannot create, manage, and delete lists, add or remove columns in a list, or add or remove public views of a list.

This permission level allows users to manage lists. Users are able to add, edit, and delete list items and documents and delete versions, and browse directories. Users can also edit personal user information, manage personal views and add or remove Personal Web Part. Users are also able to update personal web parts. This permission level cannot manage permissions (including assigned permission to users and groups), create subsites, create groups, and manage alerts.

Design

Users can add and customize pages, apply themes and boarders, apply style sheets, override list behaviors, and approve items. Users are able to add items, edit items, delete items, delete versions, and browse directories. Users can also edit personal user information, manage personal views and add or remove Personal Web Part.
