What is IP address and MAC address?

Each of the computers attached in the networking are given some name (or address) by the network administrator in 32-bit digits in 4 octets( for example: 192.168.0.1), which is known as IP address. IP address has two parts-network number and host number. Network number is used to identify the network to which the computer is connected and the host number is used to identify the particular machine connected to that network. Each of the computers connected to a single networking system must have a unique IP address, which is defined and assigned by the network administrator.

Another way of identifying the machine attached to the network is MAC address. MAC address is the serial number given by manufacturer of the NIC(Network Interface Card). Each of the NIC produced throughout the world has different MAC serial numbers. So, a computer having a particular MAC address is easily identified. It has the format FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF(for example 02-06-8C-01-02-04)

For data communication, along with the message to be sent, some other information including IP address and MAC address of the receiver and the senders has to be attached to the message.

Sweet, a little more explanation would be nice but it is short and to the point, concise.
