Which One Is For You?: Netbook Sleeves, Cases, Bags, Or Briefcases
One of the first things you need to do when buying a netbook is deciding on how to protect it. You have many options. There are netbook sleeves, netbook cases, netbook bags and netbook briefcases. Buying a sleeve or case gives you protection from dust, water, and other things that may scratch or damage your netbook. A netbook is designed to be very portable so you are almost guaranteed to travel with it. It's only natural to protect your investment. While each option protects your netbook, each provide different degree of protection as well as utility. When choosing one of these options, consider price, utility, and size. Let's look at each option and you decide which is right for you.
Lets take a look at the netbook sleeve. Netbook sleeves are the cheapest out of the 3 options. They are also the smallest. Netbook sleeves are popular among people that want the most portability out of their netbooks. People that buy netbook sleeves like the minimalistic approach. Sleeves are simple and cheap. Netbook sleeves can easily be stored in other things like backpacks and messenger bags. Netbook sleeves are usually made of neoprene which is a soft material that is water resistant. Some are made of nylon which is a synthetic fabric. When buying a netbook sleeve, decide if you want to get one with zippers or not. The cheapest sleeves do not have zippers. They're like a big pocket. Some people prefer sleeves without zippers. Make sure you buy a netbook sleeve in the proper size. I've seen some people buy a larger sleeve so they can put extra stuff along with their netbook but the extra accessories can end up scratching your netbook. It should be a snug fit. Higher quality sleeves have soft materials on the inside and padding.
Hard Shell Cases
Netbook cases are the next buying option for netbook protection. There are 2 styles of netbook cases. The first style is the hard shell. The second style is the book type case. The hard shell netbook case is the cheaper of the two. Hard shell cases are similar to sleeves. They are rugged and tough. They are usually made of plastic and are more water resistant than neoprene sleeves. The only place water can penetrate is through the zippers. Make sure the fit is snug and/or the inside is soft to prevent scratches. Hard shell cases are perfect for those who want the compact size of a sleeve but a little more durability.
Book Style Case
The second style of netbook case is the book type case. The book type case opens up like a book. It is integrated into the netbook. When the netbook is opened, the case is opened acting like a skin and resembling a book. With netbook bags, briefcases, sleeves, and hard shells, you have to set them aside while using your netbook. With book type cases, they fit over the netbook and function like a glove. Book type netbook cases are not water resistant. Water can damage the netbook from the sides so be careful of where you put your coffee. On the other hand, they are very durable and will protect the netbook from scratches and light shock. Book type cases are very expensive. Unlike sleeves and hard shell cases, they are exclusive to the make and model of your netbook. This makes them very prestigious. Adding to the cost and prestige, many book type cases are made of genuine leather. They are also very attractive.
Bags And Briefcases
The last type of carrying case for netbooks is the netbook bag or netbook briefcase. Netbook bags are the largest of them all. Netbook bags are designed to carry everything you need. This includes your netbook, power supply, memory cards, external mouse, and even your external hard drive. Netbook briefcases may generally refer to leather or vinyl netbook bags. Netbook bags are ideal for extended travel where you may need to charge your computer. Netbook bags always have a handle and a shoulder strap that is often detachable. Some people use full sized laptop bags as netbook bags with extra room. Netbook bags are common among heavy computer users like college students and businessmen.
What's Right For You?
If you want a simple case to protect your netbook, go for a sleeve or a hard shell. If you want an exclusive and cool way to protect your netbook, consider the book type case. If you want to bag that is mainly for carrying your netbook and all of its accessories, then consider buying a netbook bag. If you want the function of a netbook bag but a little more status, then consider a netbook briefcase.
There are also combinations of all these styles. You will often see sleeves with extra side pockets and handles. Protecting your netbook is not only smart, it's also fun. There are lots of customizable sleeves, cases, and bags with styles to fit your personality!
