If you are looking for a solid music player for when you're at the gym, you should seriously consider buying the Mini Clip MP3 player. It's so cheap and simple, even your grandma can afford it and use it. However, it does have a few drawbacks. So, let's review this device and compare its strengths against its weaknesses!

Positives

I'm sure all people who've had one would agree that the Mini Clip MP3 player is a great toy. It's really fun and easy to use. It comes with a standard Mini-USB cable and does not need the installation of any additional files management software. This means you can transfer and delete songs straight to and from a folder in the device. Pretty neat!

In terms of design, the Mini Clip looks very stylish and yet simple. It's also very small and light, which makes it incredibly comfortable. How can you carry something so small, you might ask? - On the back side, there is a clip that allows you to attach the device to your clothes, for example. You can also put it in your pocket without even noticing it's there.

The only visible thing on the front end is the button area. One circle and a ring wrapping around it make up for the six control buttons: volume (up/down), playback (forward/back), pause and play. You are not bothered and confused with other unnecessary buttons, like menus, tools, etc. It's very straightforward. Additionally, there is a power switch located on the side and a standard 3.0mm headphone jack.

Finally, one of the best things about this player is that it comes with a slot for a microSD card. Many of the fancy new ones do not allow for external memory and only have internal storage, which can be very limited. The Mini Clip player gives you the opportunity use your own memory card.

Negatives

Unfortunately, this device has as much weaknesses as it does strengths. Most notably, it doesn't have a display. Sure, you don't have to worry about scratching anything, but how can you know the current status of your playback: how much of the song is left; how deep in the playlist you are, etc.? The answer is, you'd have to guess!

Speaking of playback, there is no shuffle mode. You can only go forward and back until you reach the song you want to hear. Moreover, when you turn off the player, it resets the playback, which means that you'll start from the top the next time you turn it on. To make matters worse, the device doesn't even have a play mode (rock, concert, club, etc.). If you need more bass, you'd have to buy more expensive headphones that have this function already built in them.

Last but not least, there may be some connection problems. Earlier, I mentioned that the Mini Clip has a slot for a microSD card. However, sometimes, you'll experience problems when connecting your device to PC. More specifically, you computer may not be able to recognize the memory card, especially so when its capacity is huge. This hasn't happened to me, but I've heard some complaints. So keep it in mind!

Summary

Even despite its many flaws, the Mini Clip is a great device. It's conveniently small and light, yet very well built. You won't have to worry if you drop it on the floor, it has a robust layer of plastic surrounding its inner parts. Also, there is no display to scratch.

The Mini Clip player works like a charm. It has only the most important buttons on the top side: volume and playback controls. The device has a good sound, but you might want to buy advanced headphones, if you're looking for exquisite club sound.

So you can't create and shuffle through playlists, but you can create folders and organize them according to your needs. This way, you can choose which folder to access first by arranging them in the device management folder.

Best of all, the Mini Clip is unbelievably cheap, ranging between $3-$8. Whatever happens to your player, you know you can always afford another one. And it's a great piece of electronics, despite all the negatives. It functions just as it's supposed to, and no less.

PROS:

  • Cheap
  • Light and small
  • Stylish and simple design
  • MicroSD slot
  • Standard Micro-USB cable and 3.0 headphone jack
  • Easy file management
  • Good sound

CONS:

  • No display
  • Can't create playlists
  • No shuffle and play mode
  • Restarts when turned off
  • No buttons lock
  • Some connection problems

Verdict: Buy it!

Good review of the Mini Clip MP3 Player. This seems perfect for those that are looking for something portable and cheap. It's too bad that it has quite a number of flaws though the positive things about it should make up for those flaws.
