Like the picture on top at the beginning of this page...

I've tried many things and found out by installing a older msn messenger version fixed this problem.I've used this version MSN Messenger 8.5.1235

to fix the problem do the following

1- make sure to uninstall you current msn messenger by doing the following...

  1. Go to the bottom screen and click Start
  2. Click "setting"
  3. Click "Control Panel"(A window will popup, which is the Control Panel)
  4. In this window look for and double click on "Add or Remove Programs/Windows 7 is named Programs and features"(A window will popup, which gives you the "Add or Remove Programs")This window shows you all the programs that have installed on your windows.
  5. On this window. There's 4 options on the left side of this window, which are named
  • Change or Remove Programs,
  • Add New Programs,
  • Add/Remove Windows Components
  • Set Program Access and Defaults.

I want you to Click on the first option"Change or Remove Programs" at the top left of this window. Then a list of your current installed programs will load and once its loaded.

6. In that list of programs.Look for "MSN messenger" and highlight or select it or click it.

7. Then on the right you should have a "Remove" button.Click "Remove"(a window will popup, which is the uninstall window)

8. On this window press ok to uninstall

This should uninstall live messenger off your computer.

next...

Download an older MSN messenger from http://www.oldversion.com/MSN-Messenger.html

  1. Install msn messenger once its downloaded on your computer.Locate the msn installer in the folder you have downloaded in. once located...
  2. Double click it and a window will pop up which is Windows Live agreement terms
  3. Click Accept right at the bottom right of the window and a next window called "Customize and begin installation" will appear with 2 optional options
  4. On this window "Customize and begin installation" unchecked the 2 options and click install right at the bottom right and windows will launch the installer.
  5. Once the install is done the next window will appear saying Installed(there is additional options on this window but I've unchecked them all sense I don't use them)
  6. click close at the bottom of the window.

After installing the components 1, 2, 3 , 4 , 5 and 6 steps. You should be able to use your msn messenger and signing with no problem at all.

again, this is only for temporary fix because some of us had this problem with certain new version of msn live messenger. Also this may work to some and may not work for others but hopefully it helps

enjoy chatting again and thanks for your time.

Umm,

I have windows 7 home premium ...

and the instructions which you have given do not work..

first of all in windows 7 there are no options on the left of the "Add or remove programs" window...

Secondly, windows live messenger does not appear as MSN messenger but as 3 separate Windows Live components.

Also I have tried doing the method before, but it does not work ..

Any other suggestions ?
