Will your children know how to survive without technology?
Seems that today every child over the age of 10 has their own cell phone. But what if all the technology that we rely on every day abruptly stopped working? Do your children know how to use a compass, or better yet, how to make their own? Know hot to use a phone book, or an encyclopedia?
I haven't thought of such a situation; I think we need to teach our kids about how to be without using technology. The truth is we ourselves are addicted to technology these days.
Absolutely, children should learn how to survive without the modern technology. We should teach them survival technique when disaster comes especially in these days that disasters are frequent.
By the way, let's include some grown ups.
This is the technology age of the world! To be honest it is just not right. I think children need to start with simple life of making their own toys and using their imagination to play! And yet you have every right to spoil your child with everyday rubbish you can buy. Surely, this question need to be ask from children, Do you like to play with mum and dad or with your computer? Very seriously, today parents are not at home, and no time to play, so yet, you have pretty easy answer, buy some new technology things to baby sit your child! This is a question that you better think and forget after some times, ok that is the normal answer to now a days! But my friend, if we think about it, technology only makes life easy, it cannot help creating life for children. (My English is ok, sorry if there is any grammar or spelling mistakes! )
Definition of "technology": the science of the application of knowledge to practical purposes.
Even a homemade compass is "technology". We have been slaves to making our lives more comfortable since before the dawn of man.
I agree with most of the answers so far, technology is an addiction. And technology is meant for creating an easier life for us. But I think back to my childhood, going camping, learning how to fish without a pole, make fire without matches, find direction without a compass, etc. I've been putting off doing the same with my children as most of them aren't old enough, but it's something that I'm eager to do.
The question came to me when our internet was down the other night, and my 9 year old asked me to use the computer. I told her it wasn't working and she asked how she was going to do her homework. She had to write a paragraph about an indian tribe. I told her to get the encyclopedia out of the office. Her response was "the what?".
I would like to challenge all that read this to pick one day and remove all of the electronic devices, computers, phones, televisions, and see how you and your children fill the day. It's a fun experiment, we do it about once every couple weeks now.
I think it is so important for children (and adults!) to learn survival skills. We don't know what the future holds in store for us. Life, as we know it, could come crashing down. A fun way to learn some basic skills is to go on a camping trip... and I am not talking about a camper equipped with a toilet and microwave!
