Start by conserving. As a nation, we Americans are extremely wasteful of energy.
Let's just take transportation for an example:
We drive extra-big cars. We drive everywhere...it is rare for us to walk more than across the parking lot. We don't plan our trips, and rarely car pool. It is extremely rare for an adult to use a bicycle for transportation. Compare this with most any other society on the planet, and you will see that we, as individuals, are very wasteful.
On the governmental side of this, we do not invest in energy-efficient infrastructure. There is little to no investment in things like light rail. Only the biggest cities have subway systems. Many suburbs don't even have sidewalks to encourage people to walk from their homes into the center of town.
You will find similar issues in all other areas of energy consumption.
True energy independence starts with using less.
