As best I understand it, there are two main sources of the primary ingredient of plastic: Crude oil, and recycled plastic.
Some "bioplastics" made from renewable plant sources, using materials like cellulose and starch, are available.
There are many additives to non-food grade plastics, such as fillers and fire retardants. These come from many sources, of course.

What source do you believe to be most suitable at the current stage/time of mankind?
1) recycle and reuse - but in a whole new way. Create re-usable plastics that last years or decades, made from recycled plastic. 2) Convert away from oil to biodegradable bioplastics over time. 3) Find ways to degrade existing plastics. Thanks!
Plastics are made from petrochemicals. They are comparatively strong materials made of polymers and other ingredients such as pigments, fillers, flow improvers, plasticizers and stabilizers.
Plastics are mostly made from the heavier materials found in crude oil. This is also true for wax.
Some plastics have recently been developed which are made from agricultural chaff, i.e. non-edible parts of corn plants.
