The interface of Windows 8 significantly differs to other Windows Operating systems, and while some things have been moved around "Start" is still there. When you log into Windows 8 you are essentially in the start menu, and if you navigate the mouse to the bottom left hand corner the "start" preview will pop up. Essentially I understand what you are saying, and you miss navigating through the start button options on your desktop.
