Why encryption is better than typical password protection?

If I need to access files in an encrypted folder, all I have to do is to provide the correct password. Then the ciphered version is automatically decrypted and I can see the plain version. So how can this be any better than typical password protection? What is tripping me off is that in both cases files are protected by a password. Even encrypted drive displays plain versions of the files once correct password is entered. Shouldn't it display ciphered versions ?
