My computer is constantly freezing/taking forever to load..
How I might improve my computer's performance? (I'm running Windows Vista)
The easiest way would be to upgrade the hardware, Installing some more RAM normally helps a lot. Alternatively upgrading to windows 7 should give you a performance boost as Vista is rather resource intensive.
Look into defragmenting your hard drive. (A lot easy then it sounds.) When you save items, it saves in little pieces all over your hard drive and as you get more stuff, your computer has to work harder to piece it all together as you request it, therefore taking up more and more time.
Another thing might be a malicious process. To look at this open up your task manger (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and click the processes tab. This is every thing that is running on your computer. Google the name a process to find out what each one is and which ones are potentially harmful. Also look for processes that are taking up a lot of CPU, this can help you pinpoint the problem.
It might also help to delete your internet browsing history. Go under tools then properties. You will be able to delete your history. You should also do a disk clean up every so often. To do this go to my computer. Find the C drive. Right click and then hit properties. The properties box will have a button marked disk cleanup. It will delete any files you do not need.
Could be a number of things from fragmentation to malicious viruses. Upgrading to Windows 7 maybe a better alternative, but if you are stuck with Vista, which is what I am using, then you need to do a fair bit of housekeeping. Assuming you have appropriate RAM like 2GB, then you should not have problems, even if Vista is resource hungry. The reason for the freezing is more so because Vista could not find the resource files when you click on a program, therefore defragmentation may help, unless the files are missing, in which case, you may need to re-install that specific program.
scandisc and defragmenting the hard drive can speed up your comp, sometimes by as much as 70%.
There is also: clean disc, this also has an option to delete all your restore points except the latest, I always delete them, frees up a lot of room, whether you do that is up to you, cos you know what's on your comp.
Make sure there's not too much applications or processes running in the background. Check your task manager. If it's normal, check your RAM and disk space. There must be some applications causing it to freeze somehow.
There are many possibilities why your computer is acting that way. It is possible that it is infected with a virus. Try to scan your computer using an anti virus. There are still many more.
