Best Motherboards 2013 - Asus, Gigabyte, MSI
I've already written about the best 1155, 1156, 1366, and AM3 motherboards for gaming and general office use so I wanted to write an article that separated out the top motherboards of 2013 by manufacturer for those who tend to have a brand preference.
When purchasing a motherboard I generally go with one of three brands; Asus, Gigabyte, or MSI. This doesn't mean that you won't occasionally find a great Biostar, MSI, Asrock, or other board it just means that this is generally where I look first as I have had a solid and trusted relationship with these three brands for the last 10 years that I've been building computers and more often than not their motherboards ofter the reliability and options that I'm looking for.
Asus Motherboards AM3 Motherboards
For each manufacturer section I will list the top rated 1155, 1156, 1366, and socket AM3 motherboards for 2013. While you may be able to find a motherboard that is cheaper or more expensive with additional options, my rating will be based on which motherboards I believe give you the best bang-for-your-buck performance.
How to match your CPU to your motherboard - it's really pretty simple, just make sure that your sockets match in other words 1155 to 1155, AM3 with AM3 etc...
Sandy Bridge Compatible Motherboards - LGA 1155 motherboards are compatible with the all new second generation of Intel CPU.
SATA III (6Gb/s) - Seagate has announced that it's unlikely that SSD will replace HDD for a long time. If you are on a budget and don't have enough money to purchase a SSD large enough for your PC, then consider getting a Sata 6Gb/s hard drive and a motherboard that is compatible with it for up to twice as fast read write speeds.
DDR 3 - New motherboards are almost all compatible with the latest DDR 3 memory technology and if you are a gamer, then you'll want a motherboard that is capable of running your RAM at it's top speed as it will default to the lower speed if your motherboard doesn't have the proper specifications.
USB 3.0 - USB 3.0 is up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0. USB 2.0 devices are capable of being used in a USB 3.0 port; however, they will still operate at the lower speed. USB 3.0 devices are not backward compatible.
P67 vs H67 - Generally the P designation means that the motherboard was designed for use with a dedicated rather than an integrated graphics card. A H designation means that it's intended for use with an integrated card. This is why 1366 motherboards (made for performance) do not have an H designation. Best Gigabyte Motherboards
Gigabyte has made durable motherboards for over 20 years and holds a reputation amongst PC builders as a pioneer in innovation. Other products that Gigabyte produces include graphics cards, notebooks, desktop PCs, components, cell phones, and server and data center solutions.
Gigabyte motherboards are durable and generally come with a limited 3 year parts and labor warranty so that you can feel secure about your investment.
AM3+ - As many of you know AMD released the all new "Bulldozer" line of CPU in late Quarter 2 or early Quarter 3 of 2011. Higher-end 8 series AM3 motherboards are indeed AM3+ compatible. Gigabyte has a specification portion of their website that lists whether or not a specific motherboard is AM3+ ready.
If you want an AM3 motherboard right now, then be sure that it is upgradeable to the newer line. The AM3 motherboard listed to the right (GA-890GPA-UD3H) is AM3+ ready.
The Asus P8P67 PRO is the Bestselling motherboard of the year so far thanks to Intel's release of the i7-2600k.
MSI PC Motherboards - Top Rated
MSI is an international computer hardware manufacturing company that has been manufacturing products since 1986. In the computer industry it doesn't get a lot older than that. MSI's motherboards undergo product testing and meet some of the highest industry standards in the world for quality rate (99.6%).
I generally use MSI motherboards as I seem to be able to find great deals on them when I look around the web.
Why I look first at Amazon: When you shop at Amazon you don't just get Amazon's prices you get a wide array of other manufacturers. I find that these prices almost always are either lower than what I can find elsewhere or at least on par. Motherboards shipped from Amazon are general all available for free super saver shipping and Amazon prime members get 2 day free shipping. If you sign up for Amazon Student whether you were a student in the past or now, then you'll get Amazon Prime for a year which gives you the 2 day free shipping mentioned before or 1 day shipping for $3.99.
