don't text and drive

Don't text And drive.

This weekend I was responding to a text message while driving, I almost ran head on into another vehicle, who also was texting and driving.

I had to run into a ditch to miss the other vehicle and I had a ephipany, I almost lost my life and could have killed someone else just to send 2 letters in a text message. O.K. is what I sent, I was replying to a text sent to me.

Driving while texting or distracted is very dangerous and can be avoided, take a few minutes and read this hub, maybe it will help you realize that driving and texting or driving and doing anything that is distracting isn't worth losing your life over.

Don't Text and drive - it isn't worth it, if you have to send a text pull off the road and do it the safe way.

Car Crashes kill more young people every year than heart disease,HIV and diabetes combined.

Due to texting while driving, 18 states have already adopted laws again DWI or driving while texting laws but they are having little impact.

I asked ten people if they ever texted while driving and 9 out of the ten admitted that they had and often, that is 90%.

Driving while texting

  • Make you 8 times more likely to have a accident
  • Is worse than driving with a blood level of .08 (which is legally drunk in Alabama)
  • Sending a short text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds
  • or a football fields distance at 55 miles an hour

If you want to be safer turn your cell-phone off before you turn your motor on

  • an average call last about 4 minutes, so don't try to make a call from a redlight.
  • Some people have a hard time ending a conversation once they have started.
  • If your phone is off you won't be tempted to respond to a text while driving.

Common Driving Distractions

  • Eating
  • Putting on make-up
  • Dressing
  • Lighting a cigarette
  • Digging in your purse.

Here are some tips to help keep you safe while driving.

Pay attention and eliminate distractions while you drive.

You are risking your life and freedom as well as the lives of others if you don't follow these simple things.

Think about that, is it worth it?

If you haven't eaten take 10 minutes and eat before you drive.

Ladies if you don't have your make-up on, just wait until you get to work or wherever you are going and use the restroom to put on the makeup.

Turn that phone off while you are driving, it is not worth losing your life to take a call while you are driving, you can wait until you get to your destination to make a call, if you can't wait pull over and make the call.

If you are mad or angry don't drive.

People who are mad are much more likely to speed than someone who is calm, lets say for example that you and your spouse are arguing, don't jump in the car and drive until you have had the proper time to calm down. wait at-least 10 minutes before driving.

If you can't wait until you calm down you would be better off to take a short walk until you get yourself calm.

If you can't wait call a friend or a family member to come and get you, trust me it is better to do that than to risk driving when you are upset.

I know that distracted driving is dangerous and I hope you have learned some of the dangers from this hub.

Thanks for dropping by & God-Bless-Us-All

The hands free bluetooths are illegal in Alabama, you get a ticket for em. Isn't that silly

ruffridyer 5 years ago from Dayton, ohio

Some people say it would be a good idea to get a handsfree phone line for the car. Then one can talk while watching the road. However it has been shown that holding a conversation while driving is just as distracting as actually holding onto a phone.

I live in a small town with a big college also and what you say is so true here and it is getting worse. So called adults are doing it too. They can't navigate a turn because they are too busy with the phone. Forget signaling what they intend to do, you are left to guess as they creep along and are afraid to pass for risk of them turning into to you. If you honk at them they flip you off and act like you are offending them.

Thanks for sharing this, manthy, and glad to know you're still with us. This is a pet rant of mine. I live in a college town that is full of teens and twenty-somethings who think its their God-given right to put themselves and others in danger just to text something as trivial as, "lol prolly". (Some of them obstinately advocate "their right" to do just that.)

The rest of us just need to become hyper-aware of everything going on around us as we drive.

When I was in Sweden back in 2000, I was told that if you are seen with a phone in your hand and not pulled to the side of the road, they will take your license away right then.

If you see anyone texting while driving, get their plate number and call the police.

When I lived in California, I would see women driving while steering with their chest, talking on the phone and doing their make-up. It was a scary feeling but interesting to see nonetheless. I don't know why(maybe the Pisces in me)but when told not to do something, really makes me want to do it more and more. Useful and up.

My sister texts and drives all the time. I tell her how dangerous it is and that she shouldn't be doing it, but she just blows me off. I would hate to see her get into a bad accident because of it.

Good hub Manthy, with timely reminder for everyone. Texting and driving is very prevalent and like you pointed out, very risky and dangerous. My husband has the habit of doing that but I found a way to thwart this habit of his. He hates using touch phones because he doesn't like using the interface, he's old school preferring solid buttons he can use to dial and type text on his phone. So I got him a touch tone as a gift because there is no way he could text with it using one hand without great difficulty or if he did, he probably got to his destination by the time he could finish the message. It was quite effective and he did appreciate my gesture. He told me whenever his friends or colleagues notices he uses a touch phone, he tells them it's because he's got a wife who cares a lot about him.

We lost a few people in my community due to texting and driving, so this article definitely hit close to home for me. You should definitely write a follow up article regarding drinking and driving as well. I also lost a very good friend of mine because SHE chose to get behind the wheel while intoxicated. Very good hub. I really enjoyed it! Also I voted you up!

I agree... I just read that Text and Drive specifically was the cause of 16,141 highway deaths from 2001 to 2007 and over 200,000 non fatal accidents last year. For every 6 seconds a driver spends texting, 4.6 of those seconds are with their eyes off the road, which makes texting the most dangerous cell phone activity anyone can engage in while operating a 5,000 pound piece of steel and glass. If technology is going to help, it should get all driver’s eyes back on the road where they belong.

I decided to do something about distracted driving after my three year old daughter was nearly run down right in front of me by a texting mom. Instead of expensive software with recurring fees that locks down phones and alienates the user (especially teens), I built a tool called OTTER that is a simple GPS based, texting auto reply app for smartphones. It also silences call ringtones while driving unless you have a bluetooth enabled. Its an easy way for any user (NOT just teens) to manage that text and drive temptation.

You are absolutely right that people should not text and drive at the same time. I can barely talk with a passenger and drive at the time same time properly.

Manthy, thank the LORD you are alive! Texting was declared illegal in Manitoba last year and it's quite a big fine if anyone is caught with phone in hand. My husband gets so mad when he sees drivers with a phone in their hand, and I, for one, can't imagine being able to concentrate on the road, if I was texting, too.

Thank you for writing this very valuable hub, from personal experience. Take care.

Texting while driving just became illegal here in Michigan. I hope they find a way of enforcing it. I'm glad you stopped!
