To get website traffic you have a couple of choices, you can buy it, or you can get it for free. Buying it is the quickest and easiest way, whilst free methods of entails a lot of work and can take a long time to gather momentum.

Set Up A Proper HTML Structure
For those of you who are seasoned online marketers this may be basic information, but for those who are just starting out or who have not properly understood how to optimize a website this is a crucial lesson.
After you have created a website the next thing you want to happen is that the search engines find you and know that you are online. How a search engine knows you are present online is through the three HTML TAGS that are found at the top of every web page, under the <HEAD> tag.
The three tags in question are:
1. The Title Tag
2. The Meta Description Tag and
3. The Meta Keywords Tag
In each of the tags listed above you should mention the main keyword you intend to use at least twice. Try not to be repetitive, mentioning the keyword over and over again is not liked by the search engines and they will probably ignore your page as a result.
So let me give you an example. For argument sake, let's say you are promoting a hair care product and you want to optimize your page for phrase 'hair care'. This is how the opening HTML will look like.

<meta name = "description" content="How to grow healthy thick hair with a good hair care routine">
<meta name ="keywords" content ="hair care, thin hair, healthy thick hair">
There are also 3 H tags which are important. H1, H2 and H3 are looked at by the search engines. For example, H1 is the most important. It is the headline on your page, and should include the keyword phrase. H2 is second and H3 is third etc.
Therefore when optimizing your page you must include the phrase 'hair care' in the headline. For example, <H1> 'Hair Care Tips For People with Thin Hair'</H1>
Meta Tags are used by the search engines to describe your website when it appears in the search results.

Feed The Search Engine Spiders!
Search engines can bring hordes of traffic to your sites but if your site is not optimised correctly the search engine spiders will pass them by because they cannot read them.
So what is a search spider? It is a script the search engines send out to collect information about your site, including your code, content, site popularity etc. Your page rank is determined by this information, therefore it is important that you get it right.
Keywords & Hyperlinks
Use keywords in your hyperlinks. This helps to increase your page ranking and it is simpler for the search engine spiders to read. For example, say you have a hyperlink to an internal page on your 'Playing Tennis' website called 'Tennis Tips', instead of linking to 'click here to view my page' use the words 'click here to view tennis tips' Notice the important phrase includes the keyword 'tennis'
You should also use important keywords in your filenames. Some search enginges also use these to determine your page ranking.
Once again using the example of 'tennis tips' you could name a html page 'tennis-tips.html' instead of 'Page1.html'. You will notice that I have used a hyphen in between the words. This is a good tip, because it makes it easier for the search spiders to read 'tennis-tips' rather than 'tennistips'
Search Engines Love Content
Just in case your website is not showing up on the search engines maybe you should look at the content of your pages, and how many pages your site has. Search engines loves sites that are meaty and have a number of pages.
Put dynamic content on your site, for example, an online search tab, a message board, inks directory, guest book, picture gallery, news items, site search... It all contributes to your visitors having an enjoyable experience and best of all it will entice them to come back.

How To Submit Correctly To The Search Engines
Although there are thousands of search engines on the world wide web, 95% of web surfers only use a handful of them.
The most popular ones such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, and AOL are really the only ones you need to concern yourself with as once you get listed on any of them you will sooner or later get listed on the lesser known search engines, because many of them use the main search engines as portals.
For example Netscape.com pulls its results from Google.
Don't Submit too Often.

Please remember when submitting your site to the search engines, you have to be patient. Your site will not be indexed overnight, it could take weeks or months before your page appears. Live tends to index quicker than Google.
Avoid Being Banned
I know you want to see your site listed and can become a bit anxious as to why it is not appearing, but do not keep submitting your site over and over again. If you do this the search engines can actually ban your site.
In fact, some search engine professionals believe that submitting multiple times over a short period of time, or submitting your URLs on a weekly or monthly basis - when your site and pages are already in the index - can actually hurt your rankings. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!

Commenting On Blogs
Blogging has become another way of telling a story and is very popular. In the beginning it was used for online journaling, but it has evolved into a money making machine.
One key feature of a blog is the comment box, the place where you can leave your comment about the blog and at the same time leave your website address.
But one word of warning about leaving comments.DON'Tover do it and leave too many comments, or inappropriate comments that do not relate to the blog, and never say 'hey, visit my site', otherwise you will be branded as spamming. You also run the risk of being blocked and not receiving approval.
So when you do leave a comment ensure that it is relevant to the blog's subject and that the blog is a topic that attracts a similar audience to the website you want to promote. Your goal should be to build credibility so that people will want to visit your site.
Let's say your site is about iPods and you've found a blog about them ,but the author has left out some key information about the iPods. You could leave a comment stating how great the blog was and then briefly mention the key points that were missing.
Other commentators will see your comment and will respect the fact that you offer some key information, they may not have known. This adds to your credibility and further ensures that other commentators will visit your website.

In order to leverage page ranking link popularity is probably one of the single most important criterion for search engines, especially Google.
Apart from the number of links you can make, the quality of the links are decidely more important. To be honest, the search engines don't care if you have a zillion links when at least 90% of them are irrelevant.
Let me give you an example. Let's say you have a site about forex trading. You've scoured the net and found 60 webmasters who agree to exchange links with you. The only problem is 50 of those 60 links have absolutely nothing to do with forex trading.
Next when the search engines spider the net, they see your site and the number of backlinks you have, but when they see that the links are irrelevant they ignore them. Your ranking will not increase, and in fact it might move down. So you must ensure that any links you obtain are links that are relevant to the content of your own site.
Contextual links are best. They are links that appear within the context of an article. For example, say, your site is about growing tomatoes, and you write an article about the best plant food to grow tomatoes.
You then source a site that contains great advice about plant food for tomatoes,and mention that site within your article. This does the website owner a favor as the link is surrounded by relevant content that relates to his site, and the search engines pick this up and award points for this type of linking.
So when you are thinking of linking to another site, don't just add the link to your site without any information. Instead review and research the site and add it to a relevant article, blog or hub on the same topic.

Many webmasters use this tactic to increase the content of their websites or blogs, and invite 3rd party contributors. This is a win, win scenario. The author of the site increases his/her content, and gets a break from writing, and you the contributor gets exposure.
Search for websites and blogs in your niche and find out if the webmasters allow guest authors. Make sure you have a few sample articles ready in case they ask.

It is so amazing that many people do not capture email addresses on their websites. Email marketing is by far one of the most effective ways of creating loyalty and trust with your visitors.
And what better way to keep the interest of your visitors than by offering them a newsletter. A newsletter can keep your visitors informed with what's new at your site, and it also provides you with the opportunity to market additional products and services to them.
What's also great about a newsletter subscriber is that they've already told you they like what you have to offer.
Don't Go For The Sale Every Time
However, one of the biggest mistakes that many people make is trying to put too many sales pitches in their newsletters. Beware, because if you appear as though you're trying to get your visitors to buy something every time you send out an email, they'll catch on and quickly unsubscribe. Instead offer a few freebies in the form of ebooks, tips and advice.
The only exception to this rule is if you own a shopping website.
However, if you have an information website on how to play golf, and in your newsletter you're constantly trying to get people to buy from different sports you're affiliated with, that's a different story.
Mix Relevant Information With Product Recommendations
It's very important that you find the right balance of providing quality information and soft selling. In other words, every email you send should not be promoting something.
Only once in a while should you throw in a recommendation for a product you believe your subscribers will be interested in.
Let's say you send out a newsletter on how to perfect your golf swing. You can go through the techniques in your email and at the end you can recommend your favorite golf video from Amazon.com. This is where you send them to buy the video and Amazon.com's affiliate program pays you.
So even though you are promoting a product, you still began the email by offering them some valuable information about the topic of golf. What is brilliant about this is if you do this effectively, it doesn't come off as 'selling'. It comes across as if you are making a recommendation for a product you love.

This is a great follow up to tip #7 (sending newsletters) because they are somewhat related.
An autoresponder is an automated message that is sent to your subcriber's email address at intervals that you specify. It's another great way to stay in touch with your visitors and create loyalty by sending a series of follow up messages.
If you sell goods on your website, you can use an autoresponder to contact the customer a few days after they have made a purchase to find out how they like the product.
This is also a good opportunity to solicit testimonials and use them on your site. You can also use the autoresponder to inform your customers about other products that you have to offer.
Autoresponders also work great for sites that teach people people how to perform certain tasks, and they work well for sites that offer any kind of follow-up information.
Let's say you built a site called dailylovequotes.com and you want to send out a new quote every day to your subscribers. You can set them up on your autoresponder and schedule them to send daily.
This tool can be used in so many different ways, and you can get as creative with them as you'd like. The point I'm trying to make, is they allow you to stay in touch with your visitors and continue to promote your website with every email that is sent.

Publish A Blog
Blogging is an excellent way to increase website traffic. Blogs are free and easy to create and provided you write good content and actively promote them you can be assured that traffic to your website will grow.
The key to obtaining free search engine traffic is to get quality related sites linking back to your blog. Google, Yahoo and Bing (MSN) take your back links into consideration when ranking your website for the keywords you are using.
When you are creating your blog I recommend that you add at least 3 articles that are relevant to your topic, and inter-link your blogs with your hub pages and to your main website.
You can choose between Blogger and Wordpress. I use both but prefer Wordpress because of its flexibility.

Protect Your Affiliate Link
When you join an affiliate program you are automatically given an affiliate link, which you use to promote the program and make money from every sale made.
It may be beneficial to receive a ready made website, affiliate url, email templates and website graphics free when you join an affiliate program, but there is one major drawback, the affiliate link, it is long and looks ugly.
Example 1. An Ugly Affiliate Link
want to click on it, and this means that if there are no clicks there are no any sales. No Sales = No Money.
There is another reason why you should protect your affiliate link, loss of commissions. Many affiliates lose commissions because, people on seeing your long affiliate link put their ID in place of yours and steals the commission.
For the above reasons you should always protect your affiliate links by using a cloaking url. Do this and you will never lose commissions again.
You must generate a 'click hungry links' in order to makes sales. Look at example 2 and compare it to example 1. Which one would you click?
Example 2. Shorter Better Looking url
The above link looks a lot better doesn't? By using a link cloaker you are disguising the fact that you are using an affiliate link. If people think that you are sending a genuine "recommendation" then you will make more sales because more people are likely to click on your link. Tests have shown that there is a 10X increase in people clicking on a shorter, revised url. 10X more visitors = 10X more sales!
Be wary of using popular link shrinking sites, e.g. Tiny URL, as they can result in you losing sales. People are becoming all too familiar with these links and they realise that they are just "disguised" affiliate links. If you want to *guarantee* your links get clicked you should use a link cloaker that frames your website address.

How To Get Even More Traffic To Your Website
So you've finally finished your website. It looks fantastic, you've prepared the most excellent products for your visitors and you're ready to make lots of money. If Only!
But it doesn't matter that you've got the most 'splendiferous' looking website with the best content. It's USELESS if you don't have any visitors.or members. And to get members, you need to get website traffic and visitors flooding your site.
There are many reasons why some websites do not receive hordes of visitors, but a crucial one is that many marketers are more worried about how much money they have to spend in order to promote their site, and do not market their article effectively.
But I have some good news. You don't need to spend hundreds to thousands of dollars to give your website the massive exposure it needs to attract visitors.
There are many good free traffic techniques that could produce similar, and sometimes better results than paid methods.
Here are a few Free traffic generating tactics I use to bring in traffic to my various websites. Try them and you could have an avalanche of targeted website traffic.
1) Create An Attention Grabbing Title
The first thing that draws a reader to your website is the title. If you produce a eye catching title that interests the reader they will invariably want to investigate further rather than surfing away.
The title of your website or article is a snapshot of what readers will view and gives them an idea about what you have to offer.
To maximise traffic results you should highlight the benefit that the reader will get, after all the reader is only thinking 'what's in it for me'.
Use searchable databases to find out what keywords are popular and what search volumes are attached to those keywords.
2) Article Marketing
Article marketing is probably one of the most effective ways to establish your credibility. It enables you to give valuable information, build trust and demand authority.
Use the following tips to make the most of your article marketing:
1. You have to grab attention, so use eye-catching headlines. Follow the tips given in 1 above.
2. Once you’ve grabbed attention with your headline you must keep them interested, so from the very first sentence lock them into reading more. Subsequent sentences should create a continuous anticipation making people want to read the article to the end.
3. The Resource Box is the place where you will promote your site. Once again present the benefits of your product so that people will click the links.
Warning: Never promote your site in the body of your article; remember it is suppose to be informative, leave any promotions for the resource box.

The most powerful way to leverage from other people’s assets is Joint Venture/ Affiliate Programs. If you can persuade just one marketer who has hundreds of thousands of subscribers you could greatly improve the status and amount of traffic to your website.
It is possible to drive thousands of visitors to your website as a result of one promotional email to the subscribers of your joint venture partner, providing your sales copy converts at a high rate. You could earn a huge passive income every month.
If you don’t know how to, I suppose you are now asking ‘how do I recruit a joint venture partner or affiliates to help promote my site?’
Here are a few tips that might help:
1. Carry out a Google search of the category your website represents, and see what websites are listed on the first 3 pages. Check the websites and find out if they run Google Adsense or any other type of ads. If they do it is possible that they will consider a joint venture where you can exchange promotional banners or text type adverts.
2. Offer huge commissions (at least 50%).
3. Provide them with effective promotional and pre-selling tools. This is essential as you do not want your joint venture partner or affiliate to create the tools that represent your company. Your tools should include solo ads, different size banners, articles, classified ads/sponsor ads, emails, signature lines, keywords for pay-per-click campaigns, and more.
In addition consider creating an e-book or video that guides and teaches your partners/affiliates on how to make money by promoting your site.
4. You need to build ra elationship with potential JV partners so attending seminars and networking sessions is a recommended.
6. In order to recruit more people to promote your membership site, consider setting up a 2nd-tier affiliate program. This type of program works with the initial affiliate referring another person to become an affiliate. The first affiliate will then earn a percentage of the commissions every time his affiliate referral makes a sale. This is very powerful because the initial affiliate will earn a passive income from the efforts of his 2nd-tier affiliates.
4) Viral Marketing
Viral marketing is a fantastic way to pre-sell your site. Write a report or create an ebook on any subject you are interested in and let others promote it. If your ebook or report is good enough, people will spread them around like a virus!
There are a few tactics you should use in order for the viral effect to be effective and spread like wildfire. What you need to do is only give them the first few pages of a quality report or ebook. The report/ebook should end at a point where their curiosity is peaking leaving them wanting to read more and finish the article or find out what happens in the end.
After creating your viral reports or ebook expose them in as many places as possible:
1. Upload them in e-book directories like free-ebooks.net, ebookpalace.com, jogena.com.
2. Upload them in a software promotion service. Try upload.com again. If your viral report is in pdf format you can still upload it to upload.com as it has a category for “Ebooks” or “Ebook Software.” Just do a little research, target the right keywords and you could get lots of downloads especially as Upload.com has a high search engine ranking.
3. Give away resell rights, and give the affiliate the ability to rebrand the report or ebook with their affiliate links. This gives potential affiliates more incentive to join your program.
4. If you have a list send them your report/ebook and use social networking sites to promote your reports/ebooks.
Most email programs allow you to write a signature at the end of your email. This signature is quite a powerful free tool as it goes out with every email you send out, but it is important to take note of how it is written. So that your recipient reads the signature you should ensure that it is has a catchy tagline. Add a separator like a dotted or squiggly line between the email message and your signature. This helps set it off from the text and decreases the chances of it getting overlooked.
Keeping the tagline short and sweet will encourage people to read it. Avoid writing a long paragraph.
Tell A Friend Script
Another viral marketing tool is to add a simple form that your visitors can complete and share info about your website with their friends.
5) Video Marketing
Video Marketing has become very popular and is a powerful tool to promote your product or membership site. The best way to incorporate it in your marketing is to create an informative video that informs the reader about your product or membership and the benefits they could get by joining.
Create a tour inside your product or membership area. Give them a sneak preview of what they’ll be getting once they’ve become members.
Submit your video to video-sharing sites like youtube, metacafe, google and yahoo videos.
6) Social Networking Sites (Twitter & Facebook)
