With the EV is the hybrid doomed?

With both the Leaf and the Volt among many others is the hybrid technology still needed?  A reciprocating car engine (Some stationary diesel engines have good efficiency) with exhaust temperatures of 1800 F (980 c) is a inefficient converter of chemical potential energy into mechanical energy.

The take away of the EV is the range.  Will the EV ever have a range that will make it popular with the users?

I think both are good technologies and I don't intend to say either are bad.  I am interested to see what others think.
