Call Phones from Gmail / Google Voice - Gmail Phone connection fees

Google Call from Gmail

Google has quickly put an end to rumors by formalizing its new Voice Over IP (VoIP) service accessible through its Gmail.

Google already had the Google Voice and Google Talk services, but now to be reckoned with is Google Call from Gmail. Before, the G Voice and Talk services required both people to be at their computers, signed into Gmail at the same time. Now with Google Call from Gmail, you can call people directly on their phones.

Dialing a phone number works just like a normal phone. Just click “Call phone” at the top of your Gmail's chat list and dial a number or enter a contact’s name.

The Internet giant is therefore directly competing with Skype in the VoIP market, with free calls to the U.S. and Canada "for at least the rest of the year" according to Gmail's blog. Calls to other countries will be billed at low rates (see table below):

Users who already have a Google Voice Account can keep their assigned phone number to receive and make calls from Gmail. If you have a Google Voice phone number, calls made from Gmail will display this number as the outbound caller ID. If you wish, you can also receive calls made to this number right inside Gmail.

You’ll be ready to get started once “Call Phones” shows up in your chat list (you will need to install the voice and video plug-in (www.gmail.com/call) if you haven’t already).

Google Call is available for Windows operating systems, Mac OS X and Linux.
