How to Install Apps from the Opera App Store on an LG Rumor Touch- The Willie Files Episode 3

Opera web browser has a mobile app store too. LG Rumor Touch users have not been able to download apps from this store because the format used is with the JAD first instead of the JAR.

If you are just looking to install apps and games without a bunch of steps, this is not the hub for you. Look at the list below and go to "Install Java Apps on LG Rumor Touch" for the easy instructions. These instructions are for those who want to test the limits of their phone for the sake of technological interest.

If you have no idea what I am talking about, you need to catch up on the basics.

In order to take advantage of the screenshots and instructions on how to download from the Opera Mobile App Store, you will need to download and install an Opera Mod provided by Willie.

Download Mod HERE!

Once installed, follow the instructions and screenshots to Opera Mobile App Store downloading glory!

Please direct questions on the process or the Opera Mod to Willie in SF.

A Note from BigSuperSqid- The Guy Behind FileConfusicator

I wanted to point out, a lot of downloads through the FileConfusicator have failed because the URLs pasted in are not links to files, but rather the address of download pages.

To improve the odds of a proper download, please make sure that the URL you pasted into the FileConfusicator has a filename at the end. The URL shoud end in .xxx where .xxx represents a file extension, such as, but not limited to, .jad .jar .gif .3g2 or .mp3

As an extra note, some .jad files are delivered as .htm instead of .tmp files. These still contain the Midlet-Jar-URL when edited, but have an html error message prepended to the .jad, so extra editing is required to use these .jad files if you don't want to just generatoe a new .jad from the .jar with an app line centurion, jad2jar, or minicommander.

Some good-looking links still wind up as 0-byte files, or .htm error messages when downloaded through the FileConfusicator, I'm not sure why yet but the page is still under development. It's my second software ever made public, and is still rather beta. I'm hoping others enjoy it as much as I do, and feedback on errors or problems is a good way to get the site improved.

I got it to work!

At step 18 you could just open the jar URL in a new tab and download it, FYI and BTW

@danatheteacher I would definitely appreciate it if you could email me and guide me through the process. I want to do this so that I know how to do it and for one more reason to say 'fuck you virgin mobile!'. So if you could email me asap, that would be much appreciated.

@isacc7, i think it is probably more trouble than its worth especially with over two hundred apps in our mediafire folders and vmtouch.com, and you may be right about it changing. I'll look in to it. Thanks for reading.

isaac7 5 years ago

I have been working at getting this down for a while and what i noticed is that the download links that u copy in the clipboard dont end in .jad. When i download them in fileconfuscator and put them in my apps folder it ends up to be 0 bytes and the .jad is blank. I think the app store has been changed to make this harder.

D.J. 5 years ago

I followed the instructions (although it took a while to fully understand it) and everything downloaded perfectly. i installed the game (same poker game you used) but i cant play it. Whenever i go to launch the app, the Java logo screen pops up as usual but after a few seconds it goes away as if somethings blocking its launch. There r no error messages, it just stops loading and it goes back to my phones menu

@redd, I know it's a lot of work. This is more of a tutorial on how to do it if you wanted to be able to do it, but I do not recommend it to the lay person who just wants apps. For that, you just want to look at my other hub on the easy way to install:

@wgs1912

Thanks but,

i downloaded that and i have it in my app folder but it doesn't come up under my media card.

I need a zip file with the mods' jar and Jad in it.

@Brandenj Dana has it on mediafire. Here is a link

http://www.mediafire.com/?m3gmsmoyokk7t98

Brandenj 5 years ago

@bigsupersquid

i followed the link and went to download now and the page told me 'The file link that you requested is not valid.'

is it possible for you to save that zip file to mediafire and provide a link to that? I downloaded stuff from there fine.

Thanks

bigsupersquid 5 years ago from BFE, MO, USA

ok, a regular .zip with that mod is here:

http://www.4shared.com/file/f-W5_kvO/om420test15v7...

good luck. You'll only need minicommander to unzip the file once you have it. The .jad is included.

bigsupersquid profile image

bigsupersquid 5 years ago from BFE, MO, USA

Hmm, it appears that url is no longer working.

It returns an html page instead of the file.

I'll zip up the app in a proper .zip format and put it on 4shared in a few minutes and post the link.

Brandenj 5 years ago

@bigsupersquid

okay, i did everything you said. I got the mod downloaded into my apps. I renamed it, then tried to make the jar. I got to the minicommander menu by pressing r then 1, and then 5 says to make the Jad. But i press 5 and it says 'Cannot open jar'.

I am 100 percent sure i did every step beforehand correct.

I am sorry if i am bothering you but i REALLY want to get apps from the opera app store. I am sure i can get the apps with the picture help above, ir only i can install this mod.

Thank you for your patience and please reply. :)

That file is zipped with 7zip. Don't know if minicommander can handle it.

Try this URL in the FileConfusicator:

barbados.plunder.com/x/$7SOy5koN9Qa2Nlwv6qzml6PgeZLENNxc/55c1ce79dd/?/opera420test15rev7en.jar

That should pop a download window in your OM5.1

Download to MemoryCard/APPS/

use minicommander to rename the mod and get rid of the .tmp extension, then use the same app to create the .jad

(run minicommander, browse to APPS and highlight the .tmp file, press and hold 6 for a couple seconds, delete the .tmp extension. Then highlight the resulting .jar file, press the 'R' on the screen, when it pops up the menu press 1 then 6 then ENTER. That should get you the .jar and .jad for OM4.20mod test15 rev 7)

Then install from the my stuff>media card on your phone, reboot if you have to to see the .jad in that menu.

Good luck!

Brandenj 5 years ago

I just installed minicommander 4.2 and jtextlite if that helps

Brandenj 5 years ago

@bigsupersquid

How do you unzip the mod? I have bluetooth ftp1.6 but don't fully understand how to use it

bigsupersquid profile image

bigsupersquid 5 years ago from BFE, MO, USA

@Brandenj-

unzip the mod from the download link at top of hub (inside are one each .jad and .jar) into your sd card APPS folder.

Go to main menu>my stuff>media card through the phone menus.

If the mod's .jad shows up there, highlight it and click GO. Follow the prompts.

If the new .jad doesn't show under media card, reboot your phone (off then on) and it should show up after that.

More info on app installs on one of the 3 'willie files' hubs at the top of this page if you're still having problems.

Brandenj 5 years ago

Thanks for the posts. But Im still kinda lost on the installation of the opera mod. I downloaded it into my apps but i Dont know where to go from here. If you could help me step by step, i would appreciate it.

Thanks.

@Brandenj-

also, there are a whole lot of games/apps out there which install and run but won't work with the RT because they look for softkeys (which this phone doesn't recognize) for opening menus, accepting prompts, and so on.

Blah.

This device is all about searching for programs which work, trying hundreds to find a few good ones.

Lots of install/test/delete, or installation failed/try to mod .jad/install again and etc.

Good luck.

@Brandenj You can download it from the link at top of the page to phone or computer it is in a zip file. Do just like the other games or apps you have installed. Works the same way.

Brandenj 5 years ago

Hey guys, i have the LG rumor touch from vm. Ive gotten games and apps from Vmtouch.com but many do not work.

I have a question about the opera mini mod. I have 5.1. And wanted to ask if you download the mod straight from the phone or a computer. And where do you save it?

You can email me anytime at Bjermyn@student.monroecc.edu or just post more here :)

thank you

@wgs1912-

nice find on the mod menu. Thanks for the kudos!

@everyone-

it looks like links for downloads from Dreamstrikes forum and umnet both require login cookies, which FileConfusicator will need a serious upgrade to handle. Even though the links look good, Dreamstrikes pushes a whole forum page as the downloaded file, and umnet seems to refuse to push .jar files at all and gives 0-byte downloads through FileConfusicator.

@ dana , wille, bigsupersquid Thanks for all the great work you all have done to make this phone what it is today. I bought my vmrt Aug. of last year so I have seen all the changes from the begining back at Howard Forums. When I got my vmrt I did not even know what jar or jad files were. I have since upgraded my sons arc to a vmrt. So again thanks for all the hard work.

Also I have found another trick for the 4.2 mod. If you long press a link at the bottom of the list hit info. You can copy the address for the download link without loading it.

bigsupersquid profile image

bigsupersquid 5 years ago from BFE, MO, USA

@Dana-

Hope you don't mind, but I've pointed to this page from the instructions on the FileConfusicator site, since it's both a bit easier to read than my directions, and because it goes into use of/provides a link to the OM 4.20 mod.

That mod helps SO much with getting working links compared to unmodded OM, I had to reference it. Not to mention the text-editor function built into the mod, which makes it possible to crunch .jad files for the Midlet-Jar-URL without leaving the browser.

@willie-

Oh, yes, people are indeed using the FileConfusicator... According to my logs, though, most users aren't taking the time to verify there is a filename at the end of the URL they paste into the tool. All kinds of URLs with no filenames at the end are in the log, well over 60% of the download attempts in fact. So to those users, it would appear the tool doesn't work, because it pushes an error as a file instead of the desired download (sure, the error checking could be greatly improved but I'm low on time lately.)

I'm not so worried about praises, but feedback on which valid-looking links don't work would help with debugging the tool. It is, after all, my first webapp, and my first foray beyond HTML into server-side software (PHP in this case.)

@Dana - SORRY that I didn't comment on your new Hub earlier. The notify from HubPages wound up in my bulk folder.

GREAT job, as usual. You are a master at making sense of sloppy instructs - especially the disjointed crap that I post.

ANYWAY... I too would love to take credit for all this but all I really did was post one of the many practical uses for these two great new apps/tools: Squid's File Confusicator and MacNeth Zone's new OM 4.2 Mod. I only recently started programming/modding (I got very lucky with my Bolt 2.12 ST Mod). So all I bring to the table is two unskilled contributions: 1) I read everything I can find related to the VMRT (& J2ME) & 2) I test drive a sh!tload of apps. The credit should go to the programmers like BigSuperSquid & the MZ Team who donate their time & skills to write new (or modify existing) code.

ALSO, I'm kinda puzzled as to why more VMRT people aren't exploiting the File Confusicator & publicly singing its praises. It really is breakthrough. For me, this was the final step to freeing myself from a USB cable & using my handset only (no PC) for nearly all tasks. You can now DL .jars AND .jads at will - AND using whatever browser you prefer. Our previous "OTA" app install options were complicated and limited to either hunting down scarce zipped .jar files or using my not-terribly-stable Bolt mod (and its clunky Bolt UI) to DL .jars. Dling .jad files was not an option - until now.

HOPEFULLY, people ARE starting to use the File Confusicator & MAYBE they will soon start posting links to sites or even links for downloading the apps or games they found using this new tool. MAYBE.

@Dana-

You, and whoever wants to use the process, are all quite welcome.

Willie in SF has been a real cheering section for my efforts the whole way to this point, and his tutorial is really a nice piece of work.

I'm a big believer in freeware, and so I tried to make this widely available for others to use even though I really built the FileConfusicator for myself.

I've fought with myself a bit over trying to figure out a way to make a buck from the traffic, but I dislike ads and don't want to charge people for such a simple service as a download facilitator. So, it remains free and relatively uncluttered.

A tool to automate fetching .jars from .jads wouldn't be hard to build, but I can't currently afford the time investment needed to write it. That tool could be a webapp like the FileConfusicator or an on-phone J2ME app which uses an external server transparently.

Enjoy, and questions/comments are welcome and even solicited! My tool has seen a LOT of use, even if it doesn't always provide the desired results... Over 1600 page hits so far, and it hasn't been up for very long yet. So, people, how about some feedback?

@bigsupersquid, I would love to take credit for the nice layout/instructions, but Willie in SF is the one primarily responsible.

It sounds like you are also very responsible as well- I was not aware that you were behind this tool! This is telling about how long its been since I've been over to your article. *sheepish smile*

I'll add your additional note to the end of the hub.

Thank you, thank you!

@Dana, I also wanted to mention that this process you laid out so nicely for the Opera App Store, also works on other sites like Getjar, which offer the .jad files instead of .jar files up front.

I noticed you had listed at least one other site which pushed .jads instead of .jars, on another Rumor Touch hub, but I forget which hub and which app site or sites.

Nice tutorial, Dana! Much clearer than the instructions I put on the FileConfusicator itself :P

It really helps to have the modded browser, I originally wrote the tool and instructions for unmodded Opera Mini 5.1

That particular Opera Mini 4.20 test 15 rev 7 mod really makes all the difference, with the built-in text editor and lack of ejection to Netfront on downloads.
