Optoma GT720 vs GT700 vs GT360 review - Optoma GameTime Projectors

The Optoma GameTime models are DLP projectors designed specifically for gaming enthusiasts. The idea of a gaming projector, as opposed to a data projector or home theater projector, is relatively new. A gaming projector has a number of small features which helps make the projector more useful for game playing. Taken together, they add up to make a package that is optimized for games. Optoma's GT360, GT700 and GT720 GameTime projectors are the first gaming projectors on the market since Panasonic discontinued its line after the PT-AX200U.

Which GameTime model should I get?

  • The key difference between the GT720/GT700 and GT360 is resolution. The GT360 is designed for the Wii (with a native 800 X 600 SVGA resolution), while the GT720 and GT700 native WXGA 1280 X 800 resolution makes it a good choice for a PS3 or Xbox.
  • The GT720/GT700 have a HDMI port.
  • The GT700 has a slightly lower brightness and contrast ratio than the GT720 (The GT360 shares the GT720 ratings for brightness and contrast).

Gaming Features

An immersive gaming experience is obtained by projecting an image that covers as much of your visual field as possible, so GameTime models offer a short throw (the ability to project a large image from a close distance) to let you sit near the screen without getting in front of the projector, casting a shadow.

The Optoma GT line of projectors is 3D ready, with support for both TI's DLP Link and Nvidia's 3D Vision. 3D Content can be viewed when the projector is connected to a computer with a compatible 3D graphics card.

The GameTime projectors come with a very capable stereo sound system: two 5-watt speakers with reasonably high-quality, high-volume sound.

Optoma includes a component video adaptor to plug into the VGA port, an extra that you don't get with most projectors. Note that given the GT720/GT700 native resolution, a component video connection should give you essentially the same quality image as an HDMI connection.

One last feature is the included backpack. If you're the kind of gamer who likes to carry your equipment elsewhere to play, the backpack makes it easy to take the 6.5-pound projector with you. It also includes enough pockets to carry whatever cables you need.
