Electrical Activities in Oil and Gas Industries

In the oil industry the purpose of an electrical system is to generate and supply electrical energy to various loads in the plant. The Electrical engineer is responsible for designing a system that delivers this energy or electricity to utilization points with reliability and economy. On every project the electrical engineer is instructive to look at the reliability of a

system and its cost ensuring that the designed is safe for both personnel and equipment.

To achieve the above, the electrical group work closely with other disciplines namely:

Mechanical/Vessel

Control system

Process system

Piping

Civil/Structures.

The following activities are normally prior to producing the electrical deliverables.

  • • Develop design criteria
  • • Power generation/Distribution Philosophy
  • • Transient and Earth fault condition analysis
  • • Load shedding/sharing studies
  • • Preparation of equipment specifications
  • • Electrical equipment sizing
  • • Material take-offs (bill of quantities)

DELIVERABLES

The electrical group generally produces the following deliverables

depending on the magnitude and type of projects

  1. * ELECTRICAL ONE LINE DIAGRAM

This is a schematic drawing that uses graphical symbols and standard nomenclature to illustrate the overall configuration of an electrical system.

Standard symbols are used to represent electrical equipment and single lines are used to show interconnection of the components. It constitutes a key document of the project and is used for several prime activities of the project some of the most important uses are:

  • CONCEPTUAL DESIGN OR SCOPE DOCUMENT AND DESIGN CRITERIA

Presents configuration of the project electrical distribution system with ratings of major equipment and their connections

  • PROCUREMENT OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

It forms part of technical specifications used for the procurement of major electrical equipment such as: transformers, switchgears, grounding equipment e.t.c (it facilities vendors understanding of the system requirements)

  • SYSTEM STUDY

It is a basic document for electrical system studies i.e short circuit, load flow and voltage regulation studies.

  • DETAIL DOCUMENT DEVELOPMENT

It is a basic document for electrical documents such as switchboard or

MCC single line diagrams, earthing layout, cable schedule e.t.c
