Hardware these days is becoming cheaper and faster everyday. Laptops, that once used to be a luxury are now a necessity.Laptops meant for gaming used to be very expensive, are now much more affordable, but with so many laptops flooding the market, its easy to go wrong. Here I will suggest a few laptops that are great for gaming under a budget.

What to look out for?

Well, for gaming you need a high performance PC. So, you essentially need to look out for the processor and graphics card. The graphics card should get top priority but the processor should be decent as well. You don't want a high end graphics card along with a low end processor. As for the memory, the standard these days is 4GB of DDR3. Memory speeds has very limited real world gains, so I would not bother much about it.

The choices are many, but here I have selected a few models that give great value for money at different price points. So here are my picks :

Gateway NV79C47u : $749

Tech specs:
Intel Core i5 450M (2.4GHz)
4GB 1066MHZ DDR3 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 1GB GDDR3
500GB Hard drive
17.3" Screen (1600 x 900 resolution)
7.27 lbs

With a dual core core i5 @ 2.4Ghz and a ATI HD5650, this laptop offers good gaming performance at a decent price. The Core i5 is a dual core processor with HT, so you have 2 cores and 4 threads. The HD 5650 is a mainstream DX11 graphics card with 400 shader processors and a core clock of 650MHz. The card has GDDR3 memory unlike the desktop counterpards which have GDDR5. You can play most new games in medium - high settings at lower resolutions.

ASUS G Series G51JX-X1: $1199

Tech specs:
Core i7 720QM(1.60GHz)
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 RAM
Nvidia GeForce GTS 360M 1GB GDDR5
500GB Hard drive
15.6" screen (1920 x 1080 resolution)
7.26 lbs

The GTS 360M is one of the higher end performance cards. It supports DX 10.1 and is basically same as the GTX 260M but with a higher clock speed. This model uses GDDR5 memory. The processor is a Quad core i7 clocked at 1.60Ghz and 2.88GHz with turbo boost. This laptop has a 15.6" Full HD screen and overall the laptop looks sweet !

MSI GX740-235US: $1199

Tech specs:
Intel Core i5 450M (2.4GHz)
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5
320GB Hard drive
17" screen (1680 x 1050 resolution)
7.04 lbs

MSI has come into the laptop market with some great laptops. The GX740 comes with a dual core i5 and the top dog from ATI, the HD 5870 graphics card. Unlike the desktop version of the HD 5870 which has 1600 shader processors, this mobility version has just 800 shader processors. Even so the performance is pretty good for a mobility card, it matches the performance of a desktop HD 5770 in most games. This card also comes with 1GB GDDR5 memory.

MSI GX740-079US: $1399

Tech specs:
Core i7 720QM(1.60GHz)
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5
500GB hard drive
17" screen (1680 x 1050 resolution)
7.04 lbs

For an additional $200 to the previous laptop, you get a core i7 quad core instead of the i5. So if you can afford it, its a decent buy.

ASUS G Series G73JH-X1 : $1449

Tech specs:
Core i7 720QM(1.60GHz)
8GB 1066MHz DDR3 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5
17.3" monitor (1920 x 1080 resolution)
500GB hard drive
8.00 lbs

I would highly recommend this laptop if you have enough money. It features the Core i7 and the HD 5870 graphics card and you get 8GB DDR3 memory. In the previous laptop (MSI GX740-79) you had 4GB memory, so here you get 4GB additional just for $50 more. The laptop looks awesome so definitely a thumbs up for this one.

Acer Aspire AS7551G-5821: $799

Tech specs:
Phenom II Quad-Core N930 (2.00GHz)
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 1GB GDDR3
17.3" screen (1600 x 900 resolution)
500GB Hard drive
7.26 lbs

If you don't have the money for an i7 and you still want a Quad, the AMD has just the right product for you. The Acer Aspire AS7551G-5821 laptop  is the one for you. It features a 2.00GHz Quad core phenom II and a HD 5650. So you can do some decent gaming with some kind of "future proofing" with a quad core. The looks aren't killer, but its a good budget laptop none the less.

The verdict:

If you want high end performance, you will have to shell out some money. Here I have suggested various options to choose from and I must say, If I had the money, I would go for the Asus G73 laptop. For those who do not wish to spend so much, the Ascer aspire is also a good option.

I would say that ASUS G Series is comparable with Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q887... with: Intel® Core™ i7-740QM processor

i remember reading a few bad reviews over at newegg about the Qosmio, but then they have a good configuration for the price.
