WD My Book 3.0 review - 1TB/2TB Western Digital External Hard Drive -- SuperSpeed USB hard drive
Western Digital launched a new high capacity external hard drive : the My Book 3.0 drive. With 1TB (or optionally 2TB) of memory, its greatest strength is its SuperSpeed USB 3.0 certification, that makes it one of the fastest external drives now on the market.
My Book 3.0 review
What is SuperSpeed USB ?
Dubbed "SuperSpeed USB", USB 3.0 promises a major leap forward in transfer speeds and capability, while maintaining backwards compatibility with USB 2.0 devices. USB 3.0 is the next major revision of the ubiquitous Universal Serial Bus. Developers and hardware manufacturers begin to develop products around the USB 3.0 protocol.
The theoretical maximal data transfer rate for a 2.0 USB connection is 480 Mbps, while it is 4.8 Gbps for a 3.0 SuperSpeed USB connection: that's a 10x improvement over 2.0 technology. SuperSpeed USB achieves this much higher performance by way of a number of technical changes, the most obvious change being an additional physical bus that is added in parallel with the existing USB 2.0 bus. But as important is the signaling method, which is now asynchronous instead of polling. USB 3.0 utilizes a bi-directional data interface rather than USB 2.0's half-duplex arrangement, where data can only flow in one direction at a time. Without getting into any more technical mumbo jumbo, this all combines to give a ten-fold increase in theoretical bandwidth, and a welcomed improvement noticeable by anyone using a SuperSpeed USB product.
My Book 3.0 drive
You'll understand that the innovation put forward by WD's My Book 3.0 is the USB 3.0 speed more than the (although enormous) storage space. Western Digital has equipped their new external drives with this technology to speed data transfers to and from the hard drive. However, for this to be effective, the receiving hard drive must be able to keep pace! To this end, the manufacturer offers a package including the disk drive and a PCI-Express USB 3.0 controller card, to offer the best transfer rates possible. With an interface that’s up to 10 times faster than the previous-generation USB 2.0 interface, the My Book 3.0 drive significantly reduces the time it takes to open and save large files. giving the user the speed needed for resource-intensive activities such as video editing, animation, and graphic design applications.
Please note that I said that the interface is 10 times faster. In reality, the limitations of the external drive itself (currently at ~3.0Gbps) creates a bottleneck in the USB 3.0 environment. As such, we can expect to see approximately a three to five-fold increase in real-world performance, which is still a major improvement.
