The Oakland Car Company of Pontiac Michigan, better known as just “Pontiac” released its first car under the Pontiac name in 1926. Pontiac is probably best known for playing a big role in the history of the American “muscle car.” In the 1960’s with the release of the GTO, and later with the Firebird and the Trans Am, Pontiac was at the forefront of this movement. Pontiac did attempt to change with the times; making a number of smaller, more fuel efficient cars starting in the 1980’s and into the new millennium, but the company never seemed to hit the mark. Pontiac finally ceased operations in 2010.
