A device called a fifth wheel allows the tractor to be easily connected to the trailer. The tractors in these configurations have extremely powerful engines to allow them to pull huge cargo loads. Tractors can pull different types of trailers. Some may be completely closed box type trailers, which usually carry goods that need to be protected; while others may be flatbed type trailers such as the kind you might see hauling lumber. In all cases though, the tractor is the part doing the pulling.
