Emission System
The Clean Air Act of 1977 stated that there needed to be limits to the amount of pollutants that could be emitted by any vehicle. Since then all cars in the United States must have a system in the car that monitors and regulates the amount of these hazardous materials. The key piece that helps reduce emissions in vehicles is the catalytic … Keep Reading → converter. The catalytic converter is part of the vehicles exhaust system. As carbon monoxide and other pollutants are passed through the catalytic converter they are broken down and converted to carbon dioxide and water. The EGR valve also plays a role in reducing emissions. The valve helps to reduce nitrogen output by lowering the temperature in the combustion chamber. Another important factor in reducing emissions has been replacing the carburetor with the more efficient fuel injection system. Improvements in gas tanks and gas caps have also helped to reduce emissions. Before these improvements, much more gas would regularly escape and enter the atmosphere.
