Many of the greatest writers of all time are known primarily or entirely for works of fiction. Examples include William Shakespeare, George Orwell, and Ernest Hemingway. More recently the works of Stephen King, J.K. Rowling, and Dan Brown have been very popular. Many of the greatest works of fiction were made into films. Some of the authors mentioned already as well as others like J.R.R. Tolkien wrote the stories that became some of the most successful films ever made.
