Historical Fiction

Fiction is the term used to describe stories that are based on the imagination of the author. In some cases the story may take place in or around real events in history. This type of story has come to be known as historical fiction. An excellent example of this is the classic novel Ragtime, by E.L. Doctorow. All of these characters are moving between events that actually happened and events that the author created. Everything that happens in the book is fiction; even the real people and real events are portrayed in situations that are entirely of the authors’ imagination. Other classic works of historical fiction include The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, and Gone with the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell. In the hands of a skilled storyteller, historical fiction can be fascinating.
