Comics are a form that is sometimes misunderstood. Perhaps that’s because it is a form that is sometimes misnamed. The classic comic strip has long had dedicated audiences. But that is only a small part of the world of comics. Many of the classic comic books and later the graphic novels have been about characters that existed in dark, often bizarre worlds. Not only are these not funny, but many of them are terrifying. Some deal with the most serious of subjects. The classic, Maus, by Art Spiegelman is one of the best examples of this. There are many other examples. The works of Frank Miller and others show the many possibilities of this form.
