Graphic novels are basically larger comic books that come in standard book form. Unlike many of the superhero based comics, a lot of the most successful graphic novels focus on dark characters that often live in bizarre alternate universes. . Some of the best authors of this genre include Frank Miller, Alan Moore, Warren Ellis, and Jamie Delano. Some graphic novels have used established comic book characters and taken them to the next level with full length graphic novels. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller is a great example of this.
