There is rarely enough quality content for magazines and websites and they are always looking for good writers. There are also freelance sites like Demand Media that won’t pay a lot, but they can quickly get your name on an article that appears in a popular website. Having examples of your work that have been published online will be helpful when you approach offline publishers.
