How to Write for Children

If you secretly long to be the next Dr. Seuss there is good news. The market for children’s books is very strong. The first thing to do is decide what age range you want to focus on. There are books for pre-readers whose parents read to them. There are books for beginning readers. And there are books for older children. Go to a bookstore … Keep Reading → or amazon.com and check out the most popular books for the different age ranges. Read as many of those books as possible. Make sure to also read the classic authors such as Beatrix Potter, E.B. White, Lewis Carroll and others. When you read the books pay special attention to elements of structure. How does the writer present the characters and the story? The more books you read, the more you will understand how these authors were able to reach their audience. This will make creating your story much easier, and ultimately, more successful.
