Only by experiencing as many examples of the art form as possible can one hope to get a sense of what a poem “feels like.” Start with the greats. Legendary poets such as Shakespeare, Milton, Dickinson. Wordsworth and Frost will give you enough material to start your education nicely. Pay close attention to what you feel and when you feel it. Try to get a sense as to what the poet did to make you feel.
