The most famous works of the period include the I Ching as well as The Classic of History and The Classic of Poetry. The modern literature period refers to the years from 1840 to 1919. This corresponds to the years from the Opium War to the May Fourth Movement. The theme of revolution and revolt was common during this time. The contemporary literature era is from 1919 to 1949. This covers the time from the May Fourth Movement to the People’s Republic being formed. This era is marked by the emergence of women writers and themes of socialism. The current era has included western influences such as commercialism and a growing number of critics.
