While there is no exact date that marks the start of contemporary literature, most would agree that anything after the second half of the 20th century would qualify. Some of the best of the era include Philip Roth, Toni Morrison, Isabel Allende, Salman Rushdie, Milan Kundera, John Updike, Haruki Murakami, and Jonathan Franzen. Albert Camus is on the borderline in terms of dates, but the quality and nature of his work warrants including him in the discussion.
