Muslim literature has been very popular in India as well, with its greatest impact coming during the medieval period. A great deal of the contemporary Indian literature has been written in English. Writers such as the well-known Salman Rushdie, Vikram Seth, Kiran Desai, and Gita Mehta are among the most popular Indian writers writing in English. Many of these writers have devoted followings in western nations all over the world.
