Most of the plays of William Shakespeare stand out as the classic example of the use of blank verse and dramatic poetry. The question has been asked; if blank verse is similar to normal patterns of speech then why didn’t Shakespeare and others just use the normal speech patterns. There are subtle differences. Dramatic poetry doesn’t have a consistent rhythm, but it also isn’t as variable as normal human speech. It places parameters on pauses and inflections so there is a pattern, just not an obvious one.
