Satirical Poetry

Sestina is a form of poetry that originated in 12th century France. Arnaut Daniel is credited with being the first poet to produce work in the Sestina form. Daniel was a French Troubadour who wrote and sang poems and songs for French royalty. Sestina is a highly structured and complex form. There are six different stanzas with six lines in … Keep Reading → each stanza. There is one stanza that contains three lines as well. The last word of each line in the first stanza is used to end each line in the other stanzas. This is done in an order pattern called lexical repetition. The words that are repeated do not rhyme. Each stanza, starting with the second stanza, starts with the same word as the last word of the previous stanza. The final stanza uses all six words, with one inside the text and one at the end of the text of each line. To see an example, find a copy of Sestina, by Algernon Charles Swinburne.
