Sonnets
You have probably heard of a sonnet, but you might not know exactly what it is. A sonnet is a type of poem with a specific structural form. Sonnets contain 14 lines that are divided into 4 verses. Each of the first three verses has four lines and the fourth verse has two lines. Each verse has a specific objective. The first verse introduces … Keep Reading → the subject of the poem. The second and third verses develop the subject of the sonnet. The final verse is the conclusion. The first three verses rhyme in alternating lines. Both lines of the final verse should rhyme. The poems are written in iambic pentameter, which means that each line is in a repeating pattern of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. This pattern occurs five times on each line. The sonnets of William Shakespeare are the defining poems of the style for many. John Donne, John Keats, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning also wrote some of the legendary sonnets.
