In many performance appraisals, the employee self-rates his or her abilities on a list of job competencies such as completing tasks on time, accuracy of work, or technical skills. The manager then rates the employees on the same qualities. The difference in rating scores on these competencies becomes the basis for a personal job evaluation and career development conversation. Performance reviews are always stressful, but turning them into coaching opportunities and career development conversations makes them productive.
