After school he became an apprentice and learned the skills of architecture. This was a common method of study years ago but today most areas require a degree in architecture to be properly licensed as an architect. In the United States a licensing exam is required as well. Students can enroll in special 5 year architecture programs or complete a standard 4 year program and then go on to obtain a Masters degree. A Masters degree is usually required to teach architecture.
